I don't get it either. On the one hand they get 355hp from two liters, then 530hp from 6L.  It should be putting out 1000hp. ;D

Theyve tried that....all those cars do is break rear ends and trannies so they are all de tuned to lower numbers....SL65, S65 and the SLS were all in this same boat.

It's F'd up that the fat E63S V8 can run away from all MB V12s.

V12TT Mercedes seem pointless. Audi gets similar hp from their NA W12 and, like MB, more power from their smaller turbo V8.

I gotta agree with many of the posts above. This strikes me as a "what's the point?" car.

it's not so much being fast, but being the Top Dog that matters in these models, wouldn't you say?

E63 AMG will know his place as soon as S600 roll in, realizing that it is not at the top of the chain at Merc.

(oh, and V12 is smoother...)

When the bro at the country club shows up with his 616hp, 6L W12 Flying Spur though, there's the obvious top dog.

It's not about the the ultimate power figure, but the way it's made.  May high strung V-8's that make this kind of power will make it relatively high in the rev-range.  Or they'll be highly stressed and raucous.  The V-12 in this car will provide a tidal-wave of torque, and will be butter smooth throughout the entire rev-range.  It may only be '530' HP, but the feeling of acceleration will be smooth and strong.  And that's what really counts in these chauffeur driven limousines.

"Only 530hp"...  Forget the 60's...the muscle car era is happening now.

The turbo V8s from AMG or Audi aren't exactly marbles-in-a-blender raucous. No absence of torque either.

And it's still no reason to be down 100hp on the same displacement Flying Spur. Even the frumpy Rolls Phantom puts out 450hp from its naturally aspirated V12.

It just seems underperforming to have a 6L V12 with two turbos for that output.

Yes, the numbers seem low.  But at what RPMs are those numbers and what is the powerband like?  What's the part throttle response like versus a smaller displacement lower cylinder engine making similar numbers?  I bet you the response of this engine at part throttle is something that would open up some serious eyes.  While the guy in his heavily boosted V6 making similar numbers is matting the pedal, this thing could probably do it at part throttle.  It's not all about the peak numbers / full throttle runs.

My buddy has a 2003 W220 S600 with the 5.5L V12TT (493HP @ 5000 RPM, 590lb-ft @ 1800 RPM).  It's what we call the rocket powered sofa.  He had a guy in a Lambo try to go on him and he was keeping up neck and neck with him, even though this car is heavy as hell, all the while being quite comfortable.  Makes me wonder how the S65 AMG feels with it's 6.0L V12TT (604HP @ 4800 RPM, 738lb-ft @ 2000RPM).

Even the part throttle response of this car is quite something.    I'd only imagine that 11+ year newer engine technology makes it even better.

So, the current V8 in the S63 makes more hp than this new 12 (it's 577hp) and the V12 in the current SL puts out a proper 621hp.

I'll agree that it does seem a bit....lacking (!) on paper, but I sort of doubt it will matter much to prospective buyers.

And for those who care? There should be a new S65, and there's always Brabus....
