Wow, quite the thread that this has turned into.

I'm not a senior but I do find the diaper comment to be in poor taste and completely unnecessary.  Having said that, at least Wildsau provided a provide a mature response explaining himself and bashing seniors wasn't his intention.

But JacobBlack, I honestly find your replies in this thread to be both immature and unprofessional.

Anyways, just my useless .02 cents.

I don't have time right now to go back to the Garden of Eden where this all started, but when I do and I find out that there is a Senior element to all this, I'm gonna be pissed. TPL and I are both very active Seniors - well TPL is. ;D

Okay, let's recap:

1. The Avalon is purchased by older people, but Toyota is trying to change that statistic.
2. Tom used a line in here about old people which many people found excessive and insulting and got upset by.
3. JacobBlack is an immature git who was very rude when he was trying to defend Tom's right to try and be entertaining.
4. JacobBlack sucks.

I am sorry that I was excessively rude, I'm speaking to our audience, not my "friends on a forum" - I often forget that.

So, if the line wasn't in the article, and all the heated comments weren't in this thread, everyone would be happier?

I can make both of those things happen. I'll also leave this post so nobody thinks I'm trying to hide points 3 and 4.

Clarkson uses similar verbiage in all his reviews and I think he's funny.

And because of this, I think Clarkson is a boob.  And his reviews aren't to be taken seriously.

Not sure that is what Tom is after for himself.

Telling it like it is and what it wants to be should be the 'new direction for this car'.

Facts are facts - older people have been buying them. Why - because they have more experience and identified needs? Maybe. For sure they recognize the value, the comfort and the amenities that it and others of that ilk provide - Buick etc.

They want a conveyance that is also reliable. Toyota has been building them that way for years.

Now Toyota would like to expand the reach of their market share and offer some things that would appeal to a younger buyer. No biggie. Some folks like paddle shifters - it makes them feel sporty. So be it.

So we have a mature market that buys and now a new slant to try and attract a younger crowd. That's the story, plain and simple. No need to offend or to call out the present market. We know who we are but we certainly don't need to be offended along the way. That diaper comment was funny, but not appreciated.

American sales in 2013 - 70,000, up from just under 30,000 in 2012.

Canadian sales in 2013 - just over 1,200, up from about 429 in 2012.

I like Clarkson and find him and TG entertaining.  Much better antidote to the Kenzie style and those boring dorks from Motor Trend and the like...

You hit the nail on the head.  Clarkson's sole purpose is to entertain...not to be taken seriously as a car reviewer.  I don't think this is what Autos or the author is after.

After all, have you ever seen how many mishaps and whatnot happen during their "reviews" and comparisons"??  Either those are staged, or these are the most incompetent reviewers on the planet.  The point being, in either case these guys aren't to be taken seriously.

Exactly!  I find it more of a comedy than a review show, but they don't any claims to the contrary either.

About the only thing you can take seriously from Top Gear are the test track lap times.

Agreed.  But as I was saying...I don't think this is what Autos.ca is after.

I dunno, maybe I missed something, but I didn't read anything in this review that would suggest they were aiming for a top gear style format.   I actually thought the review was pretty positive although the car wasn't quite to his taste.

It was in reference to a commenter who said Clarkson uses comments like this and it works for him.  But Clarkson's style is more for entertainment rather than outright intelligent reviewing.

Which is why I thought that type of language/commenting style didn't work for Autos.ca

The car for the most is an improvement, but that face is one case of downright ugly, instrument panel is not far behind.  While it sold better than the Maxima south of the border, Maxima outsold it here.
