Tire sizes are a style element. After a while, the increasing size ends up affecting packaging too much and engineering will get the designers to start working the other way.

One of the smartest things Issigonis did when he designed the original Mini was put tiny tires on it. That left a lot more space in the interior and engine compartment. The small tires were also very inexpensive to replace, and to the surprise of many, didn't negatively impact handling. It's too bad everybody forgot those lessons.

Of course, large rims and tires are all about style. One of the reasons I drive an Acura is the cars doesn't have excessively wide or low profile tires. I find such tires tramline and have a harsh ride. I don't need 275-35-VR20 tires in my car. I will never need such traction as I do not race and wide tires aquaplane on Vancouver's wet roads.

I might add, Sir O, that Mini tires were infamous for how quickly they wore out.
I'd never join a group that would have me as a member.

I believe you. Of course, I put the mini up as an extreme example of what engineering could be looking at, especially for sub-compacts, where costs and packaging are critically important.

I had a 1976 Civic with 13" 155-section width studded snows and that little thing could kick some serious snow butt.

Are you sure they were 13"? My 78 had 12" rims. When did the cvcc engined civic come out? maybe that  had 13"

My '82 Civic had 13", so maybe that size became available when the 2nd gen made it's debut in 1980.

Donks! I really should track down the 1st gen builder out here in Van. He's quite well-known, and was at the classic Japanese show out here with a coupe, 'vert, and wagon 1st gen Civic.

Surprisingly my 74 TR6 was very good in the snow. With skinny 185R15 studded winters I rarely had a problem.

In regards to "worst tease",
Shouldn't that award go to the WRX concept (revealed earlier in 2013)
and the actual 2015 shown late in the year?

 :iagree:

The concept looked like a full on race coupe and we got a quite plain sedan.
