Drivers forget that transit is good for them until the system is down for whatever reason. Even if it's just 10% more traffic, I know in Vancouver the roads just can't handle that small increase in vehicles so people often report a 25% increase on average above their already horrendous average commute times.
Edmonton is not that bad, lots of excess road capacity aside from downtown and a couple of choke points like SW Anthony Henday. I do think the new train lines will be good though, the population is growing and there will be resistance to the longer commute distances.
