Yup, this morning was the second worse commute ever for me.....One time a couple years back it took me 4 hours to get home. This morning on the 401 there was about a 1 hour period where I never touched the gas pedal....Just brake, release and creep forward, brake again, release and creep forward...repeat a few thousand times.

Anyone still think driving a stick in Toronto traffic is a good idea?

Left my house at 6:30 sharpam, got to my office at 9:45am

Yes, yes I do.  ;)

Yeah, you would....

When I first moved downtown, I had the stick Mazda3, then the stick Mini. I drove in rush hour all the time and didn't really have an issue with it. I guess after a while, you don't really notice the clutch and shifting anymore...

Yesterday's morning commute was so bad, I had time to catch up on months of mind numbing posts on this forum.

And I prefer driving stick in any traffic condition.

I agree, its not a task for me.....more like a involuntary motion  :)

You guys just haven't done it, in traffic, everyday, long enough to get sick of it. A good buddy at work commutes into Toronto from Barrie. 3 years ago when we met he was driving a stick, I said he was crazy and he said all those same things (it's become second nature, it's fun, blah, blah). When he replaced his car he bought another stick....we had the same conversation again. Fast forward another 2 years (and another 100,000kms); he's absolutely dying to get out of his stick an into an auto.

Another example; my dad. He drove nothing but british sports cars for the better part of his working career. Commuted into the city everyday with them, year round. When I was a kid a remember him showing me the leather sole of one of his dress shoes; there was a hole right through it in the exact shape of a Triumph Spitfire clutch pedal. Shortly after that he bought an automatic DD.

As a driving experience; stick wins hands down, but for a daily grind commuter car, I'd never do it.

This morning's commute was sooo bad....It took me 3 hours and 15 minutes to reach my office, at total of 55kms.

Wow, I can't imagine that even in the best of circumstances. I've never lived more than 5km's from work. When not walking or biking, the morning drive is less than 10 minutes and maybe 15 going home. You know, during rush hour.... ;D

My longest commute was 64 km one way for 3 years. That is when I bought the used Tercel to abuse.

Bingo, for different reasons.

In the days when my left knee started to fail a few years ago, we had a snowstorm.  A big one.  One that turned my commute in the Jetta from 25 minutes to three hours.  By the time I got home, I needed to ice my knee.  I really miss driving stick for fun, but when the sh*t hits the fan in the GTA (which can happen on any given day, thank you very much), I am quite happy to be driving Miss Santa Fe and her big old slushbox.

Todays commute was so bad that I went home and took the day off.  About 15 cm of fresh snow here and the first road I tried to take was closed.  Tried a different route and it was blocked by dimwits who couldn't get up a small hill.  Drove around for a bit "practicing" sliding the truck and went home.  Last work day before Christmas, not much happening there today anyhow.

In the snow Wednesday, the drive home took 47 minutes. Thursday, 32 minutes. Today, 26 minutes. That's for 10.8 kms (6.7 m)

Getting better, but still needs improvement.

Wow...5 yrs.... :o  You really had to dig!

....Wpg drivers are, uhm, cautious??  Hardly ever get anyone actually driving the speed limit, 80 zone? Nah, let's all go 70.  Everyone's worried about those effing camera vans and lights.  Add some snow and yeah, I can see it taking 10-15 minutes longer.  Mine's 25 minutes in traffic or out... ;D 24/7/365.  Snow might make it take an extra 5, maybe.  And I live 3X farther away than you do.

No digging because the Search function worked!

It's been snowing here all weekend and no sign of plows or sanders. Looking like tomorrow's commute is going be a giant mess.
