Risky advertising, often serves to reinforce prevailing perceptions of the incumbent. I usually avoid this approach. Jaguar couldn't think of anything to say about itself except that it aspires to be like, or better than, Mercedes.

While I don't think it will win over Mercedes loyalists, it's cheeky and might gain traction with "swing voters" looking for a new toy.

Personally, I could never see myself buying a Mercedes (unless I won the lotto and I could procure that amazing 6x6 thing). But, I would consider Jaguar and a few other brands. Jaguar prides itself on not being too serious. I like that.

Agreed, sometimes it's nice to break away from the norm and do something that'll actually get people talking (or sharing through social media). 

Jag called out Porsche when they launched the F-Type earlier this year in print ads too.

I agree, bringing attention to your competitor can backfire. Not very creative IMO.

One of the most memorable ads that I'll bet we all remember was that of VW with the Terrorist inside. Saw it again the other day, but don't remember where. Anywho the terrorist blows himself up in the car and the car stays intact! Just seems so right... :o
