I'd also choose a Mustang GT over a Gen Coupe 3.8GT.  But if performance wasn't the number one consideration, the Genesis really comes into its own.  It is a very rewarding car to drive and sounds really good (I didn't notice any of Jonathan's "bad vibrations" when I drove a Gen Coupe last year).  Plus it comes well equipped and fake vents notwithstanding, looks pretty good.  I find Gen Coupes always catch my eye on the road.

When compared to a G37 Coupe (or Q60 or whatever the heck they're called now), the Hyundai looks like a stellar value without a semi-snob brand.

Drop the 429 HP V8 into the coupe....and many would be all over that!!  :)

I was excited to to take a closer look at the picture of the 3 gauges until I saw it

 :popo: OK who proofs these?

They are really tricky to shoot -- very reflective.  I got a bit luckier here:  http://driverblogs.com/en/Reviews/2/2/511/1/2013+Hyundai+Genesis+Coupe+38+GT+Review

It's a nice car but with the BRZ and FRS on the market I've lost any interest in it.

You know, I really like this thing. It took a bit to get used to the clutch/shifter in traffic, but the Hyundai performance exhaust fitted to this tester actually sounded amazing.

The 3.8 Coupe has my respect. I couldn't buy one in good faith over a Mustang V8 for the same price, but then again, I probably wouldn't buy one of those either.

Here are my thoughts on it:

They copied US and Germans early on as well .   of course, being island nation they had some imperialistic tendencies early on, but everything they r famous for, they learned from elsewhere then refined.

The pricing on this top-line model seems a little out of whack to me, as others have mentioned, there's too many other great options out there for less money.

That said, this particular tester sounds amazing under load, but it's quiet enough to not be annoying day-to-day. Wait a couple years for the Korean depreciation to take affect this may become a pretty sweet bargain for a very fun daily driver.

Lol.  I've looked at a couple 2-3 year old Korean cars recently.  They don't seem to depreciate at all anymore.   Perhaps you're thinking of the 80's and 90's.

Here's a loaded Genesis V6, 2011, low kms. $21,000...Just over half the MSRP on this tester.

I've seen them as low as $16k.

I don't believe it's anything other than customer perceptions that drive this sort of depreciation; the Koreans are building some really solid cars, but they're still not quite there in terms of customer perceptions outside of the enthusiast/writer circles. Similar applies to the domestics which also experience some serious depreciation based mostly on people's idea of the car's longevity...Cadillac is a perfect example of this.

I dont see how it would be cost efficient for H to start a new brand with just two luxury cars they now have

In 1989 Lexus was launched in the USA with JUST 2 vehicles:

Those were different times though. The luxury market was much, much smaller than it is today and consequently, lineups were much smaller. BMW, for example, had a 3 series coupe, convertible, and sedan, 5 series sedan, 6 series coupe, and 7 series sedan. That's it. Mercedes had a similar lineup. Jaguar had just a coupe and sedan.

A 3 out of 5 score is just not good enough for a car in this price range.  That and the bulbous rear styling kill it for me.

Back when people only bought what they could afford? Where paying $1,000 for A/C here and $1,000 for an automatic transmission there was scoffed at?

I haven't looked up any Genesis's, they are so rare it would be hard to get an accurate price range on one.  We were looking up Optimas and Rios and their Hyundai clones.  They seem to rival Honda and Toyota and put American cars to shame.

I wonder if Hyundai could build a "half price" GT-R?  Maybe an AWD Genesis Coupe with the 429Hp V-8?

they probably could, but i don't think Hyundai is sufficiently serious enough to develop that..

they never really showed sporting aspirations, unlike Honda or even Toyota with its Nascar and F1 effort.

i think though, as a manufacturer, its important to encourage its engineers to really stretch the limits of their cars to be a serious player in the upper end market.

I think that's a great idea and would help Hyundai in a number of ways. They are serious, they're a huge company with great momentum. A halo performance car would help with their luxury cred as well, this would be a possible alternative to developing a new premium luxo brand for there Equus and Genesis.

sorry to revive this (few days ) old thread, but i gotta say this to above pics :
any 3rd rate manufacturers can pay some boutique racehouse to build those cars for them.

rallying is great fun to watch, but it's hardly available to watch easily, nor is it a big factor in purchasing decision in North America.  and let's say that Hyundai wins one of those rallies.   does the one Hyundai actually sells has any parts of the rally car genetics in it?   No.  just some body parts (maybe the frame) at most.

and Hyundai has had real hard time translating any motorsports pedigree, if any exists, into the production cars.
most of their cars get knocked for not being great driving machines and the Genesis Coupe, while i enjoyed driving it, isn't a class leader in anything.  Not even value (mustang V6 ya'all).   it's sort of stuck in a place between G37 coupe and Mustang V8 in value and interior and driving dynamics.

I applaud Hyundai for having this model, but my opinion stands that Hyundai just isn't serious enough.   if they were, there would be a V8 under the hood of Genesis Coupe.
