Yup.  Other vehicles in this category are the Acura ZDX and lower on the scale the Honda Accord CrossTurd.

Flame suit on.

I think there are only three types of people who like this car

1. hard core yuppie-class BMW SUV fans who think of it as the "best" BMW (because 6 > 5, and SUV > Sedan in their mind)

2. people with excessive amounts of ego, money, and testosterone, but who are entire devoid of taste

3. people who like sparkly pink purses, small dogs, and want to sit up high
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.
That makes me feel angry!

No flame suit needed around here for this post. BMW should change more and target the status-seeking-affluent-who-are-indifferent-to-cars. We'll support them.

So much judgment and speculations on these forums about buyers of vehicles which are arbitrarily deemed as "useless".

What if, and I know this is a stretch but bear with me, the people that buy this thing buy it simply because they like it and they can afford it? Tough to even imagine, I know.

Ok, I'll bite - I mean I should know better, DIGNIFYING the X6 with this much thought, but I'll bite.  :P

Here's my take:

There are other over-the-top cars that should, on the surface, equally deserve our ire, or at least whose drivers should equally deserve our collective ridicule: e.g. the blinged-out G-wagen that never goes off-road; the Ferrari 458 that never goes about 50mph; the Hummer H2 that...exists. But the thing is, with those aforementioned cars, they at least have the *pretense* and capability of doing at least one thing really, really well and, should the owner ever feel like using and properly exploiting said car for its intended purpose, then that opportunity is there. Not so with the X6. There is nothing this car can do that another car can't do better (except for looking like the automotive equivalent of an Affliction T-shirt).

Also, I heard the X6 runs on orphaned kitten blood. Just saying...

Weight and fuel consumption of an SUV with the space of a small sedan. Like the ZDX, it's a stupid design.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

in one sense isn't it a classic?!
Hey, I've never come out and said I even like my car, let alone defend it.
it was a temporary experiment in downsizing to save money.

it's a cheap car in various ways.   This BMW obviously isn't.
beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the fact I don't see many around (1 a month if i'm lucky), says we're not alone being surprised this car is still around.

Hardly tough to imagine.

In fact the three types of people I described implicitly do like the car (I even said so: "I think there are only three types of people who like this car").

And for the ones who bought it, most of them can indeed probably afford it and I never made any claim to the contrary. In fact there is an assumption of wealth in all three of my descriptions (yuppies in the first case, explicit mention of money in the second, and the image conjured up by the third lends itself to a sugar daddy).

Really, the bottom line is that my descriptions are not at odds with yours in the least - on the contrary: my descriptions reinforce yours. Mine are just more much more detailed.

Your analysis is weak. You are posting without thinking.

You're ridiculous, and your sense of sarcasm seems to be weak as well. All of your descriptions are merely assumptions about who you think buys the X6 but they are hardly rooted in reality. This is the same crap that appears in every thread about a luxury crossover vehicle. A lot of the posters here don't like those vehicles and make up stuff about the buyers because they find it difficult to comprehend why people buy these vehicles.

My point must have gone far over your head if you think your descriptions reinforce it. Why does the X6 buyer have to be someone who only cares that 6 > 5, or have excessive testosterone and lack taste, or be some bimbo with a sugar daddy? I know plenty of people who like the X6 and none fit your descriptions. I also know people who don't like it. It's a polarizing vehicle, and if you don't understand the appeal it doesn't mean that the people buying it have some sort of fundamental flaw about them.

I just have a few issues, why have the fuel mileage of an SUV, the visibility of being stuffed into a hockey bag, the interior space of a compact and the price tag of an X5.......it just baffles me.

Actually, it's been quite successful for BMW. They build over 40k a year. Not massive numbers, but looking at sales figures on goodcarbadcar.net, it's interesting that Canadians actually buy proportionally more of them than Americans.

At this price point, emotion often counts for more than practicality in the buying process. It's why cars like the CLS exist.

But again, what does the CLS do better than an E? It has the same visibility and interior space issues that you brought up about the X6. Only difference is, you LIKE the CLS and you don't like the X6. ;)
