What would be really cool is if these small trucks, since they are small, could offer an 8 foot box.
Now that would be earthshaking!

Above are all examples of an oxymoron. Here's an idea....just get the bigger truck i.e.1500

Here is another idea.... you missed the point entirely.

My old 1987(?) Ram 50 had an 8' box and it was great!  Well, the 8' box was great anyway....rest of the "truck" not so much...:P  Nice and low is sometimes a feature in a truck, but sometimes a hindrance... :-\  BTW, I couldn't afford to buy, or run a big truck at the time, but needed an 8' box.

Agreed.

I had an 88 Ram 50 Extracab for ten years.  1500 lbs payload, 6 foot bed and a 3500 lb towing capacity.  To those who say you give up a lot if you don't get a half ton I say BS.  All I gave up was some towing capacity and a big back seat.  In return I got a truck that fit anywhere, handled much better and used half the gas.    It was a compact truck, if you get a mid size you use more gas but get the towing capacity back.

I wonder how they figure tow rating. It seems to me that the Dakota had a 5000LB rating but was that not down rated? Since this vehicle is probably a similar size and weight...how does that work. Surely there is more to it than HP. Like vehicle weight and axel rating.

Both my 1984 Ranger and my 1986 Toyota pickups had the 7' bed and regular cab. I found it the most useful configuration for the hauling I did.
That would be well into the minority opinion now.

A 5.5' bed is pretty useless as far as I can see.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

I've never had any issues with the short box on our F150 (5.5').  Granted, I'm not hauling a quab or snowmobiles routinely - then I could see a 6.5' bed being more useful (could fit everything in with the tailgate closed).  But as for hauling 4 x 8' sheets of drywall or plywood, just lower the tailgate and secure the cargo - no problem at all.  And I definitely appreciate the shorter length (and commensurately smaller turning radius) of our truck - especially in crazy parking lots during black Friday weekend!

Tow ratings are based on GVW and marketing hype. Lots of things to consider but the first is to subtract the empty weight from the gross empty to see what you're true payload is.  You need at least 10% tongue weight when towing.

That's why lots of 1/2 ton trucks cannot tow what they claim in a loaded truck.   If your trailer weighs 9000 lbs you need minimum 900 lbs tongue weight plus the driver plus gas.  The Ram is known as the worst on the RV sites.  Bring your family, dog and a bit of luggage and your towing capacity might only be 3000-4000 lbs dispite what it says in brochures.

FYI,

The Colorodo will be extended cab and crew cab only.

Extended cab will have a 6'2" bed.
Crew cab will have both a 5'2" bed and 6'2" bed available.

Rumor has it an available manual transmission is coming however only in lower trimed 4cyl versions.

The Dakota in final form was a nice looking truck but as mentioned above lower load capabilities than a full size one and too much money in comparison. This learned from truckster's postings. Still it provided a decent platform for small trailer towing I think. I don't know if that aspect alone would support multi manufacturer production with the lower carrying capacity.
