I've seen these things mounted just about everywhere in a car and sometimes in places that just seem to lack all common sense.  I won't poison this very scientific survey by saying where I put mine.  I have a Garmin nuvii 1490LMT btw.  That said, I recognize that there are some jurisdictions in the States that won't let you put these on the windshield at all.

I use my phone as GPS and it has voice turn by turn....the phone is connected through my handsfree Bluetooth so it sits in a dash cubby hole.

Before: bottom left corner of the windshield.
Now (FJ) : on the radio panel, so there is no windshield obstruction and I can operate it with my right hand without having to reach out.

I voted other.  I use a smartphone for navigation with a universal Mountek holder that goes in the CD slot (I don't use the CD player).  They also have GPS and tablet mounts.  Very easy to install and remove.

That is very nice. Might have to get one for the Z4 when I start DD'ing it.

I would never mount a portable and I would use my iPhone in a vehicle...but if I could not then it would be on low on the windshield where it doesn't obstruct my view of the road

I remembered that I have another kind of GPS mounted on the role bar of my side-by-side.   :)

My suction cup died, but until it did... I had one of these long-stem things, mounted low centre on the windshield.  My BB sat next to the vent on the driver's side console.

I also throw it in a cubby hole. It hangs on to satellites well and has turn by turn.

If I get a dashcam and a radar detector I'll have to access then through the sunroof.

So if I'm not mistaken, I think the Ontario distracted driving law makes it illegal for the cell phone screen to even be visible to the driver or something? ???

Does this only apply if the phone is being used for some "non auto related purpose"? After all I have a screen pointed at me all the time, its just built into the car.

Stuff it in the cubby in front of the gear shift and below the temp controls.

Dead center windshield, but low for me.  Closer to the dash.

All of my destinations are programmed into the unit prior to leaving, so fiddling is minimal.

My cell phone is on the extreme left of the windshield up tight to the pillar.
