^ Nice find Railton!  And pretty great of the artist to reply to you.  Sounds like she was genuinely pleased you reached out to her.

So, I bought a few bottles of the Merlot from this house back a few months ago.   It is nice, but not as good IMO as the Cab Sauv (2013 vintage) that is now out.
You'd be wise to buy some.. or don't - more for me!

But the Cab is only 13.5% and that Merlot is 14.25%. Me thinks the cab is going to be a little fresh no?

What does that mean and why does it matter?

^ Generally speaking the higher the alcohol %, the bolder & richer the wine.

Not sure what the 2012 Cab was, but probably was 13.5%.  it is a more medium bodied, fruitier wine.  The Merlot is actually 14.5% according to sticker on my bottles... it does have more "oomph" than the Cab

I'll be cracking open a bottle of the '13 Cab next week, so will see if I like it the same

Ted - will have a look for that Zin - thanks

I bought a bottle of S African Roodeberg yesterday and right next to it on the shelf was a wine I had not seen before Thelema Mountain Red. The label sucked me in and I bought a bottle also. It was time to try something different. A mixture of Shiraz, Cabernet, Merlot and Verdot? It was great.

Roodeberg (a go to for me0 $10...reduced by a buck.

   Thelema  $11/12...A bargain.

It seems to me that better wines have suddenly become available at lower prices. I must make an effort to not buy an expensive one, which might blow away my dreaming and pitch me out of the pleasant groove that I am in.

South Africa, especially the région Western Cape is known for its Pinotage, so I recommend those if you are buying from ZA (which I do myself, time to time).

Actually toured a winery there in Stellenbosch, outside of Kapstad.

Wanted something reflective of the crisper, cleaner feel of the Centre, so picked up something from val de Loire, AOC saumur champigny.

Time for an update Weels.

Last night I tried Big Smooth 2013 Old Vine Zinfandel. A Californian blend, put down on 80% new American Oak and 10% each French and Hungarian for 14 months. Big, as you would expect at 15.5 %, but very smooth - just the way I like them.
Enjoy!

^ I haven't had anything super noteworthy in the last while -
I've been liking Valpolicella's lately.

Think i'll pop this one open soon:

Came across this one a month or so ago - Mr. Blacks Concoction.  Hey, Jacob.  ;D
This one has some oomph at just under 16%, but Shiraz's are always up there...

was doing some cleaning last night and caved... i had been holding on to a bottle of red for a long while... when i got it, i had been told it would age well...

seemed pretty correct to me. when i don't finish the bottle because i just want to save some for the next night, that is a good sign!

it was/is a 2004 australian shiraz... charles cimicky autograph... lovely. had some other bottles from the winery, (trumps) and enjoyed it, but liked this on a different level.
i used to be addicted to soap, but i'm clean now

Keep a couple of bottles of that in the house and chilled at all times. Mrs.Firm loves it. I not picky, but enjoyed catching up on the thread, got me a short list of things to try.
