Test Drive: 2014 Volvo XC60

A mid-cycle refresh of Volvo's mid-size crossover gives the old girl a new lease on life. And if you see a Polestar badge on her butt, she'll kick yours in a hurry.

Really like the style of the XC60 but find Volvo lacking much beyond styling. Engine choices, fuel economy etc...je n'est ce quoi.

It's a decent enough looking rig, and surprisingly very quick too.
Good to hear that the BLIS has been switched to radar...  the old setup with the camera under the side mirror gets confused by rain, and sometimes just when the road is wet.  It's bad enough that I switch it off when raining because the (false alarm) BLIS lights constantly going on and off drives me nuts.

That centre console lid needs to be a slider.  For me, my elbow hits right there (red arrow in pic) so is always sliding off & bumping into the hard plastic below it.
The driver side armrest design is also fooked.  It has a lovely rounded design, just perfect for having your elbow roll off... those two things really kill the driving comfort, which especially sucks because the seats are so good.

^ Keep two hands on the wheel at 3/9 position.  You won't need an armrest.  :rofl2:

Jokes aside, XC60 is definitely in a need of major re-do or a significant price reduction.

I actually prefer the pre-facelift look.  This new one seems overdone to me.

Went to the website and built an XC60 3.2, which starts at MSRP $39,999, $2400 extra for the AWD.  I like how there are packages, but there are still quite a few items you can add as a stand alone option.  Like bi-xenon lights for $1000.  Or heated rear seats, windshield & wipers, and steering wheel for $1350.  Towing is decent for it's size at 1800kg.  When comparing to the RDX, that goes for $41,190 with AWD, leathe, and sunroof.  So it's about $2000 to $2500 cheaper, but can only tow 1500lbs.

So I found the base Volvo XC60 a good buy, and priced close to the competition.  If I never needed to tow, the RDX is a better buy, but then I don't think I would buy a CUV then....a wagon would be in the cards....

years ago many people liked "forever young" looking Swedish cars because of their long life cycle...Now it works against them - Saab is a museum and Volvo is still "refreshing" its models...

i love the looks, hate the price.

I know Volvo puts itself as a premium brand, but I do find many options are standard on other vehicles which makes the price go up quickly.

The problem here is that the base engine is no good. No torque, no power and is thirsty. We had the 3.2 in our previous XC70 and hated it. The 3.0 Turbo in our current XC60 is the opposite, great power, plenty of torque and uses less fuel. Go figure..

Yep - i should have added in my post above that the XC60 is quick with the T6.  The 3.2 is a pooch.
Surprised they're still using it

Hello Volvo!

If you would like to make more sales of the XC60 in Canada, please lower the over all weight and add a diesel option.

Yours truly,

Canadian auto buyer,

P.S.  Please don't do what Jeep did with the Grand Cherokee when bringing a diesel to it's line up. Which was making the diesel engine option available in the most expensive package with a $5000 premium.

well a diesel would cost at least as much as the t6... so price would sit around the mid 50's with the more common options at best...

i don't think they'd pick up a whole lot of non-volvo buyers by doing that... just might give more choice to those who are already looking at the volvo anyways... so it is no help to them business wise...

and the grand cherokee with a diesel is 5 grand more than this. it's not like it's price is way out there. we hardly sell any laredo grand cherokees, and i doubt we'd be selling a crazy amount more if the diesel was in it. it seems like most of the people who are complaining about the packaging of the diesel are the type who would never buy it new anyways.

anywho, the xc60 is a very nice vehicle and competes well with others int he class.. they really needed that new tft dash layout. their cluster and center stack while nice, have seemed dated for 5 years. that should help it seem more up to date. also price wise on this, it usually leases out very well with quite a few incentives offered.

You really think that decreasing vehicle weight will improve sales?

maybe on something like a dart, where it will increase a primary purchase reason, fuel savings... but a car like this, where principal selling points are safety and utility?...

weight savings are not priority one.

We get 10.5L/100 km out of our T6 in summer, about 11 in winter time. Not bad for such vehicle with that performance. My daughter anemic 2005 Tucson manual FWD L4 gets about the same mileage...
