Snowman, does this article sway you in either way?

I can't imagine what they're gonna do with a next Cayman after this work of art.

^ Make one that costs way under $100,000 on the road?    With all those options of course.

Great car but price as tested 96K. That's gets it into big brother territory as well as some heavy metal from other manufacturers.

Indeed, the base price is 73K but I doubt you're going to want a base-optioned Cayman (I would not) so you're at least going to pony up some money for some options.

Optioned reasonably with things I'd want, it comes to $81,365 including destination charge.

Still too expensive for my wallet, but I'm still young enough to work hard to earn it one day.

Great car, stupid pricing.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

I just built my Cayman S trying to be somewhat stingy yet picking it the way I'd want....nothing crazy just some nice sport and interior options I would have to have if buying a Porsche.....

......99K  :o

Edit: I was trying to hold off on bringing this up but I will - my almost equivalently optioned C7 comes to 68K and that's being very liberal with things like the carbon fiber roof - but still the same things like the upgraded exhaust, suspension, interior, etc.

Just sayin'  :P

Bingo.

Brad Diamond on Motoring said that a Mercedes marketer told him that "30% of the price is for the badge." Porsche must be knocking on 50%+.

I drove one almost exactly like this and I must say its magic. It was my first experience with the PDK and it is a brilliant piece of engineering. If the latest Cayman S model was available in 2012 I would have had a difficult time in deciding between it and the TT RS.

Every time I option one out online it is north of $90k and that is $20k more than my TT RS. Is Porsche justified in asking more for the Cayman S than a similarly equipped TT RS? Yes, without a doubt. I don't think its worth $20-30k more but I feel that with the amount of engineering effort that went into this dedicated platform along with the quality and the craftsmanship is certainty worth $10-15k more.

To me this is the perfect sports car. If the Cayman GTS is available in Canada for under $100k say good buy to my 911 fund.

Would you choose the PDK?  I'm sure it's faster, but I think I'd still like a MT.

The GTS will probably only come with an MT

Yeah, I'm an old curmudgeon that yells at kids on my lawn, so I want a real three pedal car.  I'll sacrifice a few tenths per lap for the fun of really rowing my own gears.

I agree that the pricing is a little eye watering. I looked at a similarly priced Cayman S today and thought...hmm a hundred grand that. Meanwhile the base 911 RWD I drove was priced at $121,000 while a manual 4S in the showroom was $145,000.

FWIW the $121k 911 can be had for between $1,200 and $1,600 month depending on the lease / finance program. Doesn't sound so bad when you look at this way.  ;D

I'm going back to drive the Cayman S but at this moment, I'd take the 911 I drove for $121 over the $96k Cayman.

They did have CPO 911 S4s from 75k to 120k...

Can't wait to see the option list though...

Base Cayman:  $73,000
G = $15,000
T = $15,000
S = $15,000

Grand total: $118,000

Plus typical Porsche options like paint, wheels, leather valve stem caps, etc...

After driving the Cayman S I'm not sure that I would. The 991 has bloated in to a GT.

It has stellar performance for a GT I'd say.  Which is fine by me.

If I were super rich, I'd have a balls-to-the-wall Cayman for track days.  I've seen some modded Caymans that bring it to a level that's nearly unreal.  The mid-engined chassis can be turned into a true track demon.  Then my daily driver would be a 911TT.  Still the best Porsche, period, regardless of price.  Lousy value, but still one of the best engineered road cars on the planet.

This.  A used 996/997 TT is a killer value though!

Pretty sure that the 991 is lighter than the equivalent 997, so at least it's heading in the right direction. There's only 160 pounds or so in weight between the 991 and the Cayman.

I didn't get the impression that the 991 is light while driving it. Not entirely sure what that sensation feels like but it wasn't the first thing I thought of for sure. More like a poised and agile heavyish thing that's not really penalized by it's obvious mass.
