Winters coming, pop quiz.. what do you do?
« on: October 14, 2013, 08:42:07 pm »
Heard people talking about winter wheels lately so curious about who does what.  Also never did a poll before and thought I'd give it a go.

Black steels without caps around here say "yeah, baby, I'm on snows..."

I'm hoping more, "Nice rims for both sets".  We're supposed to be car people FFS.

I voted "nice rims for both sets" although I'm not sure $100 alloys from Tirerack really qualify.  ;D

My cars came with black steelies and caps.   I bought alloys for summer and reused the black rims & caps for winter tires.   Simple to swap.

I just bought a new set of Michelin X-Ice 2.  ;D
Same steel wheels for both seasons though, I see no point spending $$ on a nice set of wheels for my particular van. :P

Audi had just the tires swapped...it was leased
BMW had nice for both.  OEMs for winter
GTI  black steelies for winter
M-B nice for both.  OEMs for summer

Fit black steelies all year It came with them and had another set for winter.
New Fit same.      Mrs tpl just does not care.   A -> B is it for her.

Nice separate winter rims for the Berlin taxi but brand new shiny black steelies for the Sierra snows.

I consider black steelies a Canadian badge of honour.

I consider them crap.  For me OEM alloys = Winter wheels.

Yeah, the OE alloys are for winter and a nice set of aftermarket rims for summer. I've run OE alloys (Honda, then VW) for 14 winters and never had any issues whatsoever.

But the truck wears the OE alloys in summer and gets a decent-looking set of chromed steelies (also OE, but from a lower trim) for winter.

The TSX runs on grey steelies in the winter, OE alloys in the summer. CR-V runs the OE alloys all year with a switch over.

I originally had black steelies for our previous TSX. Thought it looked cool at first ("I'm running on snows!"), but then realized I really didn't have to spend much more for good looking set of alloys...

From then on, we've purchased alloys for our cars. Winters are long, at around 5 months.

- BMW M3: Replica competition wheels.

- Mazda MX-5: Original OEM alloys (bought off another owner). Pic is not of our car but is what our car will look like (same colored car, same wheels).

- Our 'baby' miata has a cheap set of alloys as I bought the set used from another owner.

Black steelies with mismatched cheap of wheel covers.

In the winters here, no one looks at your wheels.

My name is Weels and I am a sissy.   :P

Posting this picture again as my shaming.
Got steelies for the S60 when I bought it in March 2011.  They made me 'an offer i can't refuse' on this set that were an end of season clearout.  So i said F-it I can live with these.

Never again.

The car does tend to look like crap through most of the winter, but with the steelies, it looks 1,000 x worse.
It is unstoppable though with anything you can point it through.
