clearly better cars like the Kia ( and Fiesta).

By your definition of better.

Of course it's my definition.  Why would I give someone else's definition?

Your post made it seem objective.  And great job everyone of making the thread about Toyota products.  Consistency is key...

I look at this place like hanging out with friends in a pub.  Conversation heads down endless tangents, there is rarely a point and certainly no rules.  Everyone has an opinion, no one is totally correct and feel free to disagree and for others not to give a damm.

Well, I think that competitor products have a place in the discusion...far more so than the multi-tubed stunt vehicle does. Which beyond the shape; has no relationship here. The Rio is a serious competitor here in what might be the volume non-turbo engine sector...having a step up in HP and torque in a similarly nice package. Handling might go the other way...if relevant to purchaser.
The 1.6 Turbo ST is too much mulah for me but the 1 L. 3 cyl. Turbo is intreagueing as hell and look forward to more info here. Be nice to compare with the straight 1.6 L. Similar HP but...flat line torque curve starting from low revs. A revolution in ballancing seemingly and less rotating parts/weight to accelerate...and presumably less weight to accelerate in a straight line. A winner in the EU seemingly. The future?...maybe.
The base 1.6L (seems strange to say that when there is a 1L) is attacked from both sides. And yet it has all of the CVVTs and mods that were unheard of a few years ago...to become ordinaire now and seemingly a short lived tradition about to be up'd.

I suspect both Rupert and I were brought up in the days when 1.8 litres was large and 3 litres was reserved for seriously expensive luxury cars.    I learnt to drive with 850 cc and 948 cc and the biggest engined car I owned was 1798 cc before I came to Canada.  So with proper light cars not barges, even with a/c and emission controls 2 litres seems plenty especially as 200+ bhp is easily obtainable now.
The most radical revolutionary will become a conservative the day after the revolution.

I strongly agree.  I have no problems whatsoever merging on the QEW, passing 3 or 4 cars at time on two lane highways, going from 80km/h and hitting 140km/h easily to pass.  But there are many who believe, that family compacts need at least 170hp.
