Best Vehicle Statistic Website?
« on: October 02, 2013, 09:14:24 am »
the buyer's guide here at Autos isn't 100% complete.
I've checked out Edmonds and it's also missing some information.

aside from visiting brand web sites, which is a PITA
what would be the best source to compare specs between vehicles like dimensions, etc...

Motortrend or Car and Driver comparison tests?
Not sure what specifically you are looking for but those sites may have number comparisons on the same page.

I'm looking to compare to the following with a few various models:
- HP
- Torque
- Length
- Width
- Height
- Cargo

some manufacture websites are terrible and don't have this info, or make it near impossible to find.
I was hoping there would be one single source that would have this.

Try this website

http://www.guideautoweb.com/en/specifications/compare/12232,8275/

As a sample, I just compared a 2014 Chevrolet Impala (which is really new), to a 2013 Buick Lacrosse...

Hope this helps...

Best is to find the data and make your own spreadsheet to do the comparison.

Does that 1 extra cubic feet of space make up for the extra 1L/100km extra fuel consumption.

that's what i've been doing.  But i know not all companies list things equally.  With one source, I don't have to go converting anything.   And yup, I'm a spreadsheet nerd...
will it actually change my purchase choice, maybe not...  but it's fun to do anyways.

I know with cargo, i've gotta see it for myself and how i'd tetris the space.
but it's interesting to see actual size numbers on each vehicle.

At least in the car and driver comparisons they tell you how many beer cases fit seats folded and up.

For stats like that and reliability, I like Consumer Reports. They do their own measurements using standardized methods. A lot of other sites rely on manufacturer's numbers which may or may not be realistic.

The downside is you have to get a subscription.

that...

with Solstice's suggestion that has at least given one central location to work with.
it's a guideline and I won't take it as the bible..

I've come the realize the GLK is much smaller than it's looks.
(vs Cherokee, RAV, Q5)

compared to the cost of a new car (or the cost of a mistake!) what is consumer reports really? i say it's a deal!

i don't use just one site as many times there are multiple variations depending on where the info comes from. looking at as many as you will be, i can't imagine looking at multiple sites for each will be easy...

good luck

the list is actually pretty short due to towing limitations.

I used to have access to someone else's CR password, but at the end of the day, it doesn't say much more that I can't find somewhere else.   Or sit in Chapters with a coffee flipping through the mag itself.

because I (not my wife) liked the RAV so much, not search is based on trying to find nothing larger.
it's a wild list and maybe the most diverse and unfair to compare:

Toyota Tacoma (yes bigger than the RAV but I might go with a truck)
Jeep Cherokee
Subaru Outback (absolute minimum tow rating)

on the outside looking in
Volvo XC70 (price)
Audi Q5 (price)
Mercedes GLK 250 (price and maybe too small)
Santa Fe XL (i don't really want a three seater, maybe too big)

I'm looking forward to kicking tires in March at the Toronto Autoshow.
actually both of us will as my wife needs to change hers in April.

I'm thinking of changing as early as May.

It would be interesting to see your list later.  Especially after the Autoshow, not sure when the midsize trucks from GM are due...As mentioned we are in similar situation, looking for a tow vehicle, but not in a rush...

It seems your minimum is 4000lbs, I would look at the Tacoma like the one below

http://wwwb.autotrader.ca/a/Toyota/Tacoma/BRAMPTON/Ontario/5_17811587_ON20071017093327600/?ursrc=pl&urp=4&urm=7&showcpo=ShowCPO

probably good deals on the Highlander as the new comes out soon, a used 1-2 year Grand Cherokee is a good value as well.  I like the Subaru Outback, but feel there are better values out there...

Not sure if this would apply in your case, but in Ottawa, the public library has an online subscription to Consumer Reports that gives you a near full access to their web page. IIRC, the only thing you cannot do is submit to their forum.  But, you need a valid library card and for that you need to be an Ottawa resident.  I suggest you check out local library, it wouldn't hurt.

Solstice

The next generation mid-size GMs are on the radar.  I'm just hoping they offer a 6ft box.  Otherwise there's no point buying a truck (IMO)   This is why the Ridgeline is not making the list.  We've driven it, towed with it (my dad's) and it's a great truck but if I get a truck I want a 6ft box.

I have been checking out used Highlander prices.  It's a pretty big SUV but we'll see.
(would be nice to find a hybrid, but used they're not only hard to find but still pretty expensive)

Subaru... this is going to be the "dark horse"
being a long time IMBA member - I get the Subaru VIP pricing.  This will help bring value and drop the price!  We'll see.....

PHAZOTRON
I do have a library card for a local, so at some point I'll go check it out
thanks!

I like the Cars.com one.  Fill in the vehicles, then select "Compare".  On the next page, you can add a couple more vehicles to compare and also make sure you select "Compare specific styles", which will bring up even more information about each vehicle.

Well the current GM small trucks have a 6 foot box in the regular and access cab, you get the 5 foot box in the Crew Cab.  Its nice that in the Tacoma you can choose 5ft box or 6 ft box with the Crew Cab, we will see what GM does.

ya, one of the main reasons I want the 6ft box is we'll be able to load the bikes inside without needing the remove the front wheel (if we want)  Although my friend still went with fork mounts.

wife feel the truck give the bonus of not having stinky bike shoes inside the vehicle.

CarPoint's compare tool is also pretty good:
