Both cool. I'm just done with the quirkiness of 90s vehicles as a daily driver. My Fiesta ruined 2000s era cars for me even.

I was trying to look for a unicorn Suzuki XL7 7 seater manual transmission. The few manuals I found were 5 seaters and I found one 7 seaters in the US midwest that was beat up. Then it was a matter of figuring out if I could live with the 2000s quirks.

The 2nd Gen Mazda5 partially used the same C-Platform as the 2nd gen Ford C-Max.

The first gen5 was essentially a mechanical clone to the first gen C-Max.

I think Mazda sold far, far more 5's than Ford sold C-Max's in this continent.  I think I've only ever seen a couple of C-Max's in my life.

A colleague of my wife's actually had a C-Max fairly recently. I recall seeing them around occasionally for a while, but I think the fact that it was hybrid-only limited its appeal.

They scrapped the 7 seater gas Grand C-Max plans and just brought the 5-seater hybrid instead. The similar Prius V also didn't do too well other than being popular with taxis. I thought this 2012 Mazda 5 retained the same platform that underpinned the 2000s Mazda 3/5, Ford Focus, and Volvo S40/V50. I'm curious to see how many components are still FoMoCo stamped.

My understanding is that both generations of Mazda5 share the same platform.

The introduction of the small overlap test likely contributed to Mazda not building a new gen or extending the old one?

2012, so still 12 years old. :rofl2: but the paint is immaculate, just needs a polish and ceramic coating, no rust like most Vancouver cars.

Congrats on the new to you Mazda 5. I love this concept on rationalization of the internal available space vs external footprint.

According to https://www.goodcarbadcar.net/mazda-5-sales-figures/, only 5,267 units were sold in Canada in 2012 and it was their bigger year.
Gone but not forgotten in chronological order: 2019 Volt, 2013 Volt, 2014 Spark EV, 2012 Volt and many others before...

Only? That's a pretty big number. Only 1/3 of what was sold in the U.S. in a market 1/10 the size.

OK, maybe not that small, that is fairly true the Canada market is a much smaller one than at the south of the border.

Volt figure is smaller than the 5  for comparison : https://www.goodcarbadcar.net/chevrolet-volt-sales-figures/

The European Mazda 5 numbers aren't as good as I thought they would've been, other than 2006 and 2007. I wonder if they also discontinued it in Europe in 2015 like they did in the USA. Canada continued to get the Mazda 5 into the 2017 model year. Most of it heading to Quebec I think. Quebec was the primary reason small premium manual transmissions existed in Canada and even they've been lured into the CUV craze.

I've never owned a car that's done great in the small overlap test before so I'm not missing out on anything.  :rofl2: My partner's Kia Soul did well. We are planning on trading it in for an ID.Buzz at some point.

fair enough. You can see a lot of cars getting discontinued  around the time of the new overlap.

Meh, it's not like they're any less safe than they were before the test was introduced, they're just not as safe as cars that pass the test...

KTM is just noting as more requirements are added, the two best ways to deal with the added costs are to 1. Increase the price, 2. Increase volume which spreads out the price but gets rid of the low volume stuff. Automakers are going after both if possible, they like the higher profit margins of CUVs and every typical person wants them.

But yes, my first Sienna and Odyssey were ranked among the safest vehicles on the road at the time they were released. Both would fail the small overlap test.

I can't recall the last time I saw a 5 on the roads. Will keep my eyes peeled but they are not common.

Saw a silver 5 on my way home today.

Got it!

It drives amazing so far. Smells mostly like a new car. My partner is amazed with how mint it is inside and out. Will give a more in depth review later, just enjoying our time in Vancouver doing all the things.
