Do you ever have to add oil to any of your vehicles between changes? Even with the long intervals.

The Highlander and the Corolla both use about a liter between changes.  When i change the oil I buy one extra liter and that suffices for the year.  When using the factory 8K intervals both cars used a small amount, but not really enough to warrant topping off.

The Forester's driver's side head gasket is leaking externally, oil only, and uses 1.5-2L between the 8K changes.

I change the oil in mine every 10k and there no oil company consumption. At least not enough to notice on the stick.  I mostly used whatever oil is on special(synthetic)... but now maybe I should go longer

So I found out this chilly -4C morning that the heat barely works. The air's not cold but it's not warm either. Is tepid applicable to air? Not sure if it needs a coolant flush to clear out the heating core, or the heating core is clogged on the air side, or the electronically actuated mixing box is not completely closing the cold air off.

That's standard economy for the 3.3L driveline.  I'm at 12 in the Highlander and the various Sienna owners around here seem to be in the 12s in the city.  Not hybrid economy, but not terrible.

Pretty good. I'm typically in the 13s in the city and in the 9s in the highway. If you're going off the fuel consumption meter on the roof, that thing is about 1-2 L/100km optimistic unfortunately.

So the fuel consumption has dropped in the last two weeks, averaging 13.4 l/100km, probably due to the weather as it was pretty cold until last couple of days. Manual tankful to tankful method average is 7.04 kmpl, so the difference is about 0.4kmpl.

The Forester has been throwing a CEL for the last two years and it's PCV related and it's seemingly unsolvable.

I'm an idiot.

I spent the time and actually figured this out.

Yours a 1998 by chance with the crap EGR system? If yes, I had the same issue....and put in way, way, way too much time and figured it out.

Engine code 0400 or something?

Nope, ours is a 2001, the EGR is different, but yes, code 04XX, can't recall which one now, haven't read it on forever.  As long as it runs fine, I don't care now.

So I put my Sienna up for sale. I want to keep it but it needs new catalytic converter(s) if I import it to Alberta. Sad face.

Looks good on this side despite the fact I slid into a parked car last winter, damage is unfixed. The bumper is a little misaligned by the headlight.

I’ve added 1000 km since taking this photo Thursday. Put 17,000 km on it since getting it a year ago.

Had fun camping with it a month ago.

I got one lowball offer of $1600 so far and if he’s good with the slightly misaligned bumper plus it’s been 143k since the timing belt was last replaced (interval is 144k but the original owner did the first one at 224k), I might take it. Add in the $550 I spent last year replacing a wheel bearing and it’s like I leased the vehicle for $142 a month for 13 months. Good deal.

Sequoias are a resilient species of evergreen trees that grow big and tall in the forests of Northern California. Toyota has rightly named their big SUV in 2001 after it which as a bonus should provide all the CO2 the tree it’s named after needs to grow despite the ULEV designation.

Thought I’d make a funny before showing off my 02 Toyota Sequoia SR5 which I’ve put over 350km on since picking it up on Thursday.

Likes:
-Super comfortable
-Rear window rolls down
-The sunroof is huge
-Auto climate control does what it’s supposed to do
-Hood struts
-The 10 speakers sound great, will upgrade the head unit
-The interior is immaculate

Dislikes:
-No steering wheel audio controls on the SR5
-Only two 2nd row cup holders? I’m nitpicking at this point.

So by popular demand:

Looks great. That interior appears to be in great shape for the kms on it. Wow.

Very very nice!  That's a beast!

On part irritates me though....only one tire has the white wall letters showing.  How come?

Like it. I bought a pickup of that gen for work when I was in Lethbridge. Liked it, especially the engine and the general high quality feel.

Nice truck.  I really like the look of that generation Tundra/Sequoia

How does it drive? Any squeaks rattles?

Great looking truck for winter and otherwise. Congrats! I suppose the white letters on one of the tires can be sandpapered off.
Is it an AUTO with a transfer case?

Thanks all!

On part irritates me though....only one tire has the white wall letters showing.  How come?

Because the white letter tire is fairly new, the others are long overdue for replacement by age, not by tread. I'm going to be mounting winters on the stock set and remounting the newer tire onto the spare wheel.

looks good. Headlights could use a polish.

Already on it! Should have something for next weekend.

How does it drive? Any squeaks rattles?

Drives smooth on the highways and like a truck on gravel roads. Looking at upgraded shocks and struts down the line, maybe Bilstein 5100s. No squeaks or rattles, this was an era when Toyota wanted to build-Lexus like interiors for the masses.

Like it. I bought a pickup of that gen for work when I was in Lethbridge. Liked it, especially the engine and the general high quality feel.

The engine and transmission are amazing.

Is it an AUTO with a transfer case?

It has an electronic 4WD selector which I try to keep off although I had it on most of the time after Friday's snowstorm due to the poor tires, and an H-N-L4 manual transfer case. I guess I'll figure out at some point how to use L4.

Really like the colour combo.  When buying used you sometimes get what you get if you're picky about condition and service records, so it's nice you got a nice combo.

Looks well cared for.  That's the great thing about those old Toyotas - they're not very common on the market, but a high percentage have been cared for as people keep them.

Solid find!

IIRC - that 4x4 system has an AWD mode...is that the default?

I'd love to find a Tundra of the same vintage....that's not ridiculously priced...and that isn't full of rust.   :P

I see Sequoias in better condition than the Tundras.  100% of the Sequoias were family vehicles, while a significant percentage of the Tundras were used as work trucks.  But, even a Tundra work truck with a trillion kms on it will have a high asking price!

Me too.  He's at 600K and still going strong.  It was his first new vehicle at about age 40 and he's wondering if it will be the last one, new or used, he ever owns!
