Insurance cost
« on: September 24, 2013, 08:56:51 pm »
In the UK all cars and trucks are given an insurance group, which is shown in reviews etc.  There used to be 20, looks like there are now 50:

http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/insurance/car-insurance-groups/

So it's easy to compare cars to see what will be higher or lower to insure.  Is there such a system here?

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

In Ontario there are rate groups for vehicles.
There are numbers for Accident Benefits, DCPC/Collision/AP and SP/Comp.

But I don't know where you can find them except your policy.

BTW, my Cayenne S is under $1k per year.

Welcome to Ontario.  Everything figures into the assessment of your premium, including your postal code and daily kilometres driven to work.  And no... you don't know until you call.

Some things in Ontario make no sense...

It's all stats.  The average 911 is kept in a locked garage and use on weekends.  The Lexus is a daily driver and the Supra was a big hit with the tuners.   Risk numbers.

The 911 I have listed as my commuter...not pleasure.  It's just hard to believe it's 30% less to insure considering it's value is greater than the Lexus, plus it's less safe to drive than the Lexus....which results in greater injury/medical payouts.

Yeah there's some wacky wacky stuff in there.

I found the CLK to be cheaper than the TSX to insure, and the Z4 was cheaper than the Civic too.

I think their risk models are not particularly ... uhh.... well designed. But why would they need to assess risk properly when they can just screw over everyone and make tons of dough?

This.

Allegedly, insurance rates in Ontario are supposed to drop significantly in the near future (I'll believe it when I see it).

But somebody must have finally said "Ontario is the safest place to drive in North America.  You can't keep raping people with rates like that.  You've made billions".

I don't mean your driving personally.  Insurance companies work on overall stats.

The most expensive vehicle of ours to insure, and by a significant amount, is the one that's worth the least.  The Forester.  I groused to my insurance company about it, and they told me that it's not claim frequency that kills it, but the average cost per claim.  The repair costs on the Scoob are high.  This year I finally dropped everything but liability on it to minimize costs.

I understood.  Was just giving additional info.

Still hard to believe.  911 and Supra both cheaper than luxury car.

I know there are many parts to the equation, same as in the UK, but the car rating is a good indicator.  I used to park the Exige (group 50) on the street and it was cheaper then a 2006 Outlander here in a garage! ha ha

For a while, my BMW was cheaper than my wife's Mazda to insure... then all of a sudden (with no tickets or change in driving distances, etc.) it changed last year now the BMW is about $25/yr more to insure.  My bike insurance costs me about 1/3 the value of the bike.   ::)

I have heard this as well - in SK, insurance rates on some Hondas and Mazdas (i.e., Fit, Mazda3) used to be a fair bit higher than on comparable competitors.  When questioned why, I got the same response - not the numbers of claims for those cars, but rather that when accidents occurred those vehicles cost more to fix (i.e., Fit drivers didn't get into more accidents than other subcompacts, but replacement parts may have been higher?  Or they sustained more damage in accidents?)  It sounds reasonable, but of course the insurance company can't give you numbers to actually back up that statement.

Interesting note on Subaru insurance in AB.  Here in SK, Imprezas are generally more expensive to insure than other compacts (and base imprezas too, not just WRX and STI), while Foresters and Legacies are about average for their class.
