Well why don't you enlighten us.  :)

Historically, October hasn't been the greatest time for the stock markets.

i expect there will be more losses, but I'm in for the long haul.
not much of my portfolio is hand picked stocks.   small dollars here and there, but slowly building it up.

Picked up Surge at $6.27 yesterday.
it hasn't been that low since September 2013
(plenty of energy players are getting low thanks to low oil prices, low consumption, high inventory and fears the economy isn't going to be moving for a long long time)

GSK is close to hitting a low since 2011

MCD is pretty at it's lowest since Jan 2013

If WestJet can get down to around $22 / $24 I might jump on it.  (it hit a high this year of $33)

Well that is a surprise.  Surge is my only holding and a sizeable one.  I'm been twisting like a pretzel these past few days on what to do.  Pay the capital gain  :P or ride out the storm and hope they can get the oil out of the ground they say is there.  The entire stock rests on the reputation of Paul Colbourne.  Excuse me while I go poop, again.   :fall:

With retirement in 8 years or less my FA and I have a conversation at each +/-5% change in portfolio vale. This has been an exceptional year so when it reached a +25% gain we decided to cash out. Typically I get greedy and stay in but this type of gain can mean 1 year.

Yep.  I agree.  It's the right way to go once you get close to retirement.  I'm quite far off (though I consider myself semi-retired working fewer than 40hrs a week!), so I'm more tolerant to risk.

But in your position, you need to protect yourself much more.

aside from dividend payments, you don't "make" or "lose" until you sell   :P

markets coming down a bit again today.   After spending last night reading various articles after the markets closed, they all made it seem like a huge massive drop and huge losses but looking at my charts, it's really not too bad.

Being 24 years from retirement I've got lots of time!!!   I'm just looking for those bumps or market corrections to jump in when I've got the cash to do so.

Again I'm just thinking long term.   With a dividend being paid it'll at least bring in some income.
The stock while loved by most, has had some critics and while the entire commodities market is getting pounded on the grounds that the global economy is going to stall and there's plenty of oil, I personally have time to ride the drag out and should see the economy eventually turn around and consumption resume.

Only my "gamble" stocks are dragging me down right now.  All the other stuff is still well above my purchase prices.
