I think the best value, by far, in oil is the Amsoil Signature Synthetic.  At $32 per USgal (3.78L) it's tough to beat.

Agreed. Amsoil is extremely high quality oil. Their synthetic filters, too.

Extremely tough to beat.

In all honesty, the only way to know which oil is going to be good for your particular application in the long run is to have used oil analysis done.

I have a friend who did this with his stock 350Z and made the following alarming discoveries:

1. The Nissan oil's VI modifiers would shear down in less than 500 kms, to the point where it is no longer protecting the engine.
2. Most other motor oils of the recommended (5W30), synthetic or not were not much better.
3. Switching to Mobil1 0W40 synthetic offered the best protection for the engine.  Least amount of wear, etc.

That Mobil 0w-40 is one of the few that meets MB229.x   and is what my M-B came with and the dealer uses for changes.  Caveat:  for gas engined cars I don't know if M-B diesels use something different.

Mercedes has long had a partnership with Mobil, and their factory fill synthetic is Mobil 1.  Way back when I raced air cooled four strokes, dino oil would turn to sludge in no time, with cylinder head temps of 330F.  We used Mobil 1 (in 1982 it was EXPENSIVE) and saved engines.  They make some really good oils.

And I might buy it except for the price.  Being able to buy a top tier synthetic for ~$8/L is amazing.  So, Amsoil gets my business.

Oh, and rr's right, their filters ROCK.

NEWSFLASH:

These oils get to be "exclusive" oils of certain cars because the oil manufacturer PAYS the car manufacturers for this honor.

You can get their extended life or OE even cheaper than that.

I'll put Amsoil quality up against anything.

Same here. Both of mine came with Mobil and are replaced with same.

Yup.  Those tests confirm what we already know: their products are top shelf.  If the oil can keep a 350hp turbocharged 10,000rpm 1.3L engine together, then it will work with pretty much anything that any maker puts into a car...

Exactly, it's marketing.

It means absolutely nothing from a technical point of view.

Although the oil in question does seem to be very good.
