Classic mustang
« on: August 27, 2013, 08:26:02 am »
Hey guys,

Classic mustangs have always intrigued me especially the 66-68 fastback.

Anyone have any info on what to look for and just in general how these cars run.

Any ownership experience would be awesome!

Thanks!

Have you tried joining/contacting the National Capital Mustang club: http://www.ncma.ca/forum/ ?

Plenty of guys there who can help answer your questions and maybe even help you find a nice '66-'68 to buy.

Well, I have one tip, if youre actually looking for one, go shopping in the states. Specifically Arizona, Nevada, California, New Mexico. Not only will the car be a lot cheaper down there, they will be rust free. In my mind the Shelbys and the fastbacks are the ultimate classic Stangs. Things to look out for, they were muscle cars, look for poorly repaired accident damage, most likely at some point they might have kissed a curb or bridge abutment. Rust, right around the A-pillar, floors and the rear window. Dont even bother with a inline 6....thats about the most pathetic Mustang experience you can have, they are incredibly slow....unless you are planning to slam a V8 engine into it than they make good cars.
Lighten up Francis.....

Or you can do a resto mod style, all the awesome styling of the old school Mustang, but all the modern goodies like brakes, engine, suspension, interior....I love resto mods, this whole numbers matching, technology form 40 years ago stuff baffles me.

I want a daily driver, something reliable, with air, a great stereo and with lots of giddy up when I stand on the gas. I could care less that the right marker light and the EGR plug on the air cleaner arent OEM....hell, Ill keep the engine, tranny, rear end, frame interior and all the factory stuff somewhere in storage just in case the next owner is a Concours D'elegance type....

Here's my brother's 1970 Mach 1.  It was one of 3 made with a blue on blue.  To this day, I have never seen a blue interior Mach 1.  Complete resto...right down to the proper screws and stickers.  It was a very cool car.  But overall, these old cars aren't much fun to drive.  Vague steering, weak brakes and no handling.  These are best used as boulevard cruisers.

Thats beautiful rocket!! I agree with you, ive driven several muscle cars and yes, they are not handling machines....thats why I love the idea of a resto mod, all the awesome styling of old, all the technology of today.

Check out this resto mod...just saw it on TV the other day.  Early 70s C110 Skyline.  Resto modded to included fully modified Skyline R34 I-6, brakes, suspension.  You should hear the incredible sounds it makes..watch video below.

Outstanding video about 5 Japanese car restorers/resto modders.  To see the Skyline below, fast forward to about 10:50  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouhdGnH1QmA
