Jump-Seats for Cars
« on: August 16, 2013, 10:04:52 pm »
http://www.edmunds.com/tesla/model-s/2013/long-term-road-test/2013-tesla-model-s-testing-the-jump-seats.html

This made me wonder.
Consider that some people want to buy a vehicle so it can carry 6-7 people but don't want to have the size of a mini-van or large SUV.
The Toyota RAV4 and Mitsubishi Outback have those 3rd row "small children seats".

If the "3rd row" was rear-facing it would possibly have 2 advantages over the common 3rd row seat.
1. Can be much smaller because of less room used for feet space.
2. Can be much easier to get into ie through the rear hatch.

(Well maybe it might not be compatiable with folding-seats but who know.)

What if car manufacturers provide jump-seats as the 6-7 seats for wagons and hatchbacks?
Would you buy a vehicle for that?

I think they should try a Honda CR-V with a 3rd row reverse-facing jump-seats.

I believe the e-class wagon had them available... and the 90s Taurus wagon did too.

I'm not sure there's a huge advantage to jump seats - some people get car sick going the wrong way, and if you're efficient about using space, like in the rondo, you can have usable 6/7 seats facing the front. (The 2008 Rondo is actually an inch shorter than a 2011 corolla)

We had similar seats to these in our old Volvo 740 wagon. Our boys were still small and only wanted to use the rear facing seats, not the back seat. The seats folded flat into the floor. They looked like this.

Dad had a Taurus Wagon in the 90s. I remember having to sit in that jump seat. Not comfortable in the slightest, and I had a tendency to get carsick if facing backwards.

I wonder about the degree of crash protection for rear facing seats if the vehicle gets rear ended (I'm thinking about that type of accident as it's happened to me twice), would you be more likely to get your legs crushed?

Still safer than riding in the back of a pickup truck imho.
