here's a thought.. don't get special versions of cars.
« on: July 26, 2013, 12:34:32 pm »
as enthusiasts, we usually like the biggest, baddest engined, hardest sprung, rarest optioned mofo in any given car line-up.
in 3 series, we want M3
in C-class, we want C63 AMG,
in Audi A series, we want RS4
in TT, we want TTRS
in Porsche 911, we want GT3RS....   and so on and so forth.

(with possible exception to Mustang Shelby 650 vs Mustang 440hp Boss)...

But I found that owning such machine is a pain-in-the-ass experience in long term for us budget minded enthusiasts.
parts are rare, expensive and hard to find.
not only that, nobody stocks them, have to ship them in, shipping cost is outrageous for us western folks...
proper mechanic is difficult to find and correspondingly expensive.

Sure, if you wrench on your own car, you can alleviate this issue a bit.  but it won't be easy. unlike their more pedestrian brethren, special versions often have bespoke parts and tools.

What's my proposed solution?

get the next best model...    or  the best selling model in the line up.  it may be A4 2.0, C350 or 335 or 328..  parts are way more abundant, cheaper, easier to work on ...
these would deliver 80~90% of the fun of their most expensive siblings, but 100% easier to live with in the long term.
200%, if you count the cost of buying them in the first place.

Driving thrills makes my wallet lighter.. and therefore makes me faster because i'm shedding weight... :D

While I agree with you from a practicality and financial point....my gear head voice is screaming inside. The howl of the M3 V8 is amazing, the exhaust note of the Boss and the fierceness of the C63 are all too amazing to pass up. If you can, do, if you cant....still do  ;D
Lighten up Francis.....

The 550 was quicker than the old CLK55 ;)

But yeah anything exotic is going to be costlier. But its part of the appeal, in a way. You toil endlessly and face sleepless nights worrying about your fancy "special" motor...but when the stars align and all is right it does feel more special non? ;) That's 6208 cc of god's wrath under hood.

The dude driving a C350 or 335 almost never gets that feeling. An A4 driver even less so. Around here, those cars are like Corollas. There's nothing special about any of them. They just blend into the scenery. None of those cars has the presence of a M3, an RS4, or any V8 Benz. Even the "cheap" Mustang GT and the S60R are more interesting, and the dude in an S2000 gets way more looks.

Now the "pedestrian" versions of the C/3/A4 are all great cars in their own right. But they are just a commodity at the end of the day. In some ways a 335 is a compromise car. Way more money than a Civic and basically the same when commuting in the GTA. And on Friday night its way less special than the aforementioned trophies. ;)

Now keep in mind, to have an interesting enthusiast car doesn't actually require that much money. In fact, I would argue that half of the whole "interesting" car angle is something that is old and out of production, something that you're not going to see every day. Your choice of the E46 M3 is a good one, but there are other choices with likely lower running costs which are just as "interesting" if not moreso. Perhaps that is what you seek... ;)

On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

It's a suggestion for supercar performance without supercar maintenance costs.
