Just saw an ad for the Kia Optima for $18k  (2013).  It probably has quite a bit of content and is much nicer to drive than the Corolla.

Not directly apples to apples but not that far off.  The Corolla would definitely get better mileage but in terms of car per $, the Optima is a killer at that price.

Cheers,
John M.

"This version of the Corolla was introduced as a 2009 model back in 2008. Of course there have been minor refreshes along the way to attempt to keep up with technology and changes in the market."

I would say the platform dates to 2003 with the 2009+ being a mild refresh.  Minor changes and attempt is about right.  The ancient power train was pretty lacklustre back in 2003 when I test drove one.  I can't imagine how backwards it must feel with how much progress the competition has made.  Oh well, perfect car for the unenthusiast who hates cars.  Perfect for the boring and meek.

I saw something similar, so a 2013 Mazda6 GS, with leather, sunroof, and if I remember correctly auto climate control,  for $22k.  No wonder the Toyota dealer asked you why you were test driving it.

Sure the corolla is adequate for what it does, no reason it should be listed over $18k in LE trim!

 :rofl2:

I was lucky that my parents had a '83 Honda Civic Wagon and it would slow down the stupid things I did but didn't stop me from trying. Four guys in that car doing 140 on the hwy, spinning tires, racing around corners. Of course that car did nothing to subdue me and I can be just as bad many, many years later.

Back to the Corolla....I think its a great car and has a huge market. Not everybody is like us and a lot of people just want an appliance to get them from A to B. Nothing wrong with that. Heck, if they would make a Corolla wagon I would be very tempted to buy one.

Corollas have great resale value, making them good economic sense for ownership

Actually the Corolla body was completely redesigned for the 2009 model year, although the change was evolutionary and not very different, just lower and wider.  Similarly, the 2012 Camry body was completely new, albeit not that different from the previous gen.  In both scenerios, the power trains remained the same.  Unfortunately, Toyota missed an opprtunity to retire the old 4 speed auto with the 2009 redesign.

The big draw for many is that Corolla outlasts just about anything else on the road and are practically trouble free with the bonus of high resale value.  It seems that the boring and meek are not also stupid.

My dad has a 2010...not a single problem with it.  That's more than I can say about my MIL's 2012 Mazda3 Skyactiv - had the power steering replaced already, battery wouldn't last a week without being driven in the winter on a brand new car, and poor headlights that barely cover the road - oh wait, Mazda3 has projector-beam vs the multi-reflector in the Corolla...that means that they are better, right?  In practice, I see far more of the country roads at night in the Corolla.

This segment (C) is not about the enthusiast.  Yes, the Corolla is an appliance - A to B without drama or fuss.  It's a commuter car.  It's a good starter-family car.  It's good at what it does, and just because it's slightly feature-poor compared to its competitors does not mean that it is worse.  We're averaging 6.4L/100km consistently and never feel the car is too slow...so the 4-speed is doing its job fine.

We have rear-facing and front-facing child seats in the back, yet the front seats are both more than spacious (much more than can be said for my Brother's Mazda3), and the price we paid was far less than the Mazda3.  Skip the crap in the LE trim, and the Corolla's a stellar purchase decision.  Try saying the same for the Mazda3 GX.

What a terrible car. The innate awfulness of the Corolla is so bad they have only sold like 40,000,000 of them. Epic fail.

In this generation, or since the introduction of the Corolla name?

Yes, we all get it.  It sells.  Doesn't mean it's all that.

2009- engine is new. Lots of misinformation in this thread about what's new, not new, etc.
