Fresh oil, spark plugs and ignition coils for the GTI.

I just realized VW charges a pretty penny for an oil filter ($46) and drain plug ($14). Usually I don't pay attention to the break down but this time it jumped at me and looked at the invoice.

Next time will probably buy the full package not only the oil.

^Why did you get charged for a drain plug?  Hopefully it wasn’t $14 for a drain plug washer.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

Oil pan is plastic and so is the plug of course. It's replaced at every oil change.

Interesting, didn’t know that, thanks.

Plus stock, it has ZERO protection. The stock cover is cut around the oil pan... ??? Never understood why would they do that.

Anyway, the Jetta cover, which is full size, fits just fine. And then there is the cover from Alltrack which is really good (kevlar) but $$$.

There are aftermarket steel pans available though.

Looks like VW wanted to add lightness. That rubber ring has to be the only thing to replace but I understand they don't want to take any chances. All in all it seems finicky.

I just checked the invoice for the last oil change in my GTI and there is no breakdown for individual items, but the oil (5.7 liters) + filter + drain plug was $105 plus tax, just for the parts. Amsoil sells the package for $107 with 0W-20 oil plus the filter.

This is at the parts counter or service counter?

For 2016 models?  Not now.  Ford tried this act of stupidity as well on the F150s.  Had a similar ridiculous oil plug.

Service. This is probably the list price.
I bring in my own oil and just get the filter and plug from them.

Nevertheless, even if you buy them elsewhere or OE equivalent (Elring) are 6-8 bucks. Mann filter would be around $18.

An oil change kit is $95 (Liqui Moly+Mann filter+Elring plug) - regular price at my regular local supplier. Labor this time around was $45; I think they raised their rate since the last time - $152/hr now.

Not sure about now, but I think most VW/Audi models around that time had plastic oil pans since they use the same plug.

EDIT: Add Porsche to the list. Most models 2015-2021 use the same plug.

Any local VW/Audi indy shops near you? Price I suppose it not bad but I would much rather go to an indy shop vs. stealership.

Oh, I do and it happens to be a good one, well know in the GTA VW community. This is not the problem and neither is a dealer problem.

The original post was merely a remark on how much the manufacturers charge for apparently small, simple parts. But like I said, even aftermarket and at half of the list price, those small plastic plugs are fairly expensive for what they are.

Finally got a weekend without rain here so got through some jobs. Mrs. Firm wanted this specific Elliptical from NordicTrack - the one she was familiar with using from her parents place, and finally found a good deal on one that was practically new. About an hour away from us, Escalade and this silly little utility trailer I had gotten back in the fall made it a pretty easy job. Though getting it up the stairs was another story....
Today was warm and sunny so I washed both of the Caddies and put a quick coat of wax on them both for protection.

I've been trying to sell a very similar looking elliptical thing, it's like new.
I've been dropping the price and finally got a lowballer offer,  I started at $180, eventually dropped down to $120 a few days ago, he's offered $90.

Yeah used equipment (unless it is good free weights) is tough to get rid of. I have an exercise bike and would just give it away to get rid of it. We use the C3 rower and I find it much better for muscle involving cardio.

Yeah, equipment like this is a burden really. At $200 we'll see if she uses it much...if not, it's outta here. Lol. This thing was so new it still had the plastic wrap on the screen, and the heart monitor was in the original unopened packaging....new (2021) it was like a $1500 unit - sucks for the people who bought it new and rarely used it, but pretty typical I think.

My wife got on ours once for about 2 minutes.   I pointed out that it wasn't plugged in and that she was pedaling in the wrong direction, she never got on it again.

I think she'll use it, at least for awhile. She's been pretty consistent for years about making time to workout. There's a gym close by she's been using for classes and whatnot, but with the kids it's difficult for her to get over there during the week when I am at work. This gives her an option at home.
