I'm not sure what a "legit" hitch is?

2,000lb hitch rating which exeeds the car rating.

Thats an actual hitch, I've seen these things bolted to usually the hatchback in heels type of vehicles, that are only meant for bikes and canoes and crap, not towing

Oh!

Ya, it's sandwiched between the rear bumper beam and the chassis. Bumper had to come off for install.

That boat is a lot smaller than I thought. I was fearing tail wagging the dog but that looks fine.

The motor must be close to half that weight?

Not a combination you see every day!

Looks like the tongue weight pushes the rear down a bit, but I guess on pavement you should be fine

Ok. Here's all of the particulars.

PJ: Yes, it pushes the back down because my ball mount isn't correct. Which is by fault. Because I'm an idiot. I absolutely KNOW to measure the receiver in the car and coupler to the trailer to get the correct rise or drop. And it just slipped my mind. So it's 3.25" too low. Quite shockingly, I need a neutral ball mount. Both measurements identical. Am ordering correct one tomorrow.

Firm: it feels..adequate but certainly isn't ideal on the 401. It's perfect on 80km/h roads, however.

On the 401, there are frequent elevations, mainly overpass sections. So the car works more going up. I never floor the Prius in my daily driving (why bother? ) so the RPMs sounded like they were screaming to my ears!! So I hooked up my reader and did some datalogging. The max RPM experienced while towing at 110km/h with cruise was 4096 RPM. The steady state, level cruise was about 3000 RPM. My economy was 8.8L/100 km or 27 MPG. Probably worst case scenario. Cold -15. and the radar wing so high on the boat.

On 80km/h roads, it's much more relaxed. Very good I'd say. Economy reflects this at 6.2L/100km or 38 MPG.

In either situation, I don't think the trailer rides particularly smoothly.  But it's a tiny trailer, so that's to be expected. Components of trailer are quality. Though I don't trust the un-serviceable, sealed, completely waterproof lifetime bearings...even though they are highly regarded. Maybe I'm just old and always thought packing bearing was part and parcel of trailer ownership.

So yea, all is well. I don't think I'm saying anything we don't already know. The Prius Prime isn't a highway tow vehicle. But in a pinch? No problem. I didn't hold up traffic, this didn't feel dangerous, etc This just isn't the Prius' game. That being said, I'd not hesitate to take the boat on a road trip with the Prius.

Now on the county roads where I'll be towing, it's good! And I'll be towing in EV mode too.

So far, no need for a dedicated tow vehicle!!
