Took the Crosstrek for its second service today at around 20,000 km. I was expecting it to be pricey, and they didn't disappoint.  :P

Basically just an oil change and the usual inspections, but Subaru also includes a brake service (take apart, clean and lube.) Brakes were grabby AF for the first couple stops afterwards, so at least I could tell they actually did the work.  ::)

They also put it on the alignment rack and found the toe was out on both left wheels. Not sure what was up with that. Car is less than a year old and I've never crashed it over anything.

Oh well. Was around $430 for the regular service and another $130 for the alignment. $610 with tax and shop supplies.  :P

Why did you bother doing the inspections and brake service? Seems like the only thing it needed was oil change and alignment.

Just less hassle, I guess. I'll go along with what Subaru recommends until the warranty is up.

WTF!

Why did you bother doing the inspections and brake service?

The deal is that if you pass on the brake service you forfeit any warranty on any part of the brakes.  Any part!  Now every 20K km is ridiculous.  Acura has it at every 2 years or 40k km.  I had it done because the rotors are terrible on that car and I need them to last another year.  The Armada got a full set of brakes under warranty after only 18 months. Maybe it's the extreme use of Cargill's evil green road salt used in my area that kills Japanese brakes, but something is going on.  Will be doing the Nissan brake service every spring until end of the lease (every 2 years required).  That will make it their problem again.  22 months to go.

They charge $120 plus tax for 6.5 liters of "synthetic" oil.  Requirement is every 8k km.  No usage meter.  Try and get it in  before 11K km.  See's only highway and lives in a heated garage.  Wish it had a usage meter.  You can knock 11K off in the 3.5TT F150 and 11K in the MDX via the meter before required change.

The Subie is coming back home on Monday, after a few week's nap in manufacturer's lots. I'll check what is due, service-wise, in the manual. I'm at 14 months, just a tad over 10,000 km and one service done so far.

Subaru's have always been expensive to service vs others in the same segment like Toyota, Honda, Nissan etc. I remember this from the leased Impreza that was in the family 7-10 years ago. Not sure why this is the case as the only differentiator used to be AWD, not so unique these days, and as far as I remember the maintanence schedule does not call for work on it frequently.

The dealer's #1 goal is to separate as much money from you as is possible. That is why leases and owners who flip cars within warranty is ideal, it's an opportunity to add in an extra $500-$1000 per year. Service is a big profit centre.

From Subaru.ca for my 2022 Crosstrek, 12 months = "B" service that includes:

Quote
Scheduled maintenance for 20,000 km / 12 Months
Replace engine oil and filter
Rotate tires
Inspect tire condition and adjust all tire pressures including spare tire
Remove, inspect and service front and rear brakes as well as parking brake
Inspect and adjust all fluid levels including both differentials
Inspect operation of all lights, wipers and washers
Inspect and adjust drive belt tension if necessary
Service battery
Inspect axle boot condition
Lubricate all latches, hinges and locks (hood, doors, fuel door and trunk lid)
Inspect all steering and suspension components
Inspect under body for damage
Test coolant, inspect hoses and clamps
Inspect engine & air cabin filters - replace if necessary
Inspect clutch operation (if applicable)
Road test vehicle

So a LOF using bulk oil performed by a lot boy. I did plenty of those while in high school for a Pontiac/Buick dealer. Other than the brakes that is a 15 minute job max. Even at 2 cars per hour the labour cost is about $10/car. Bulk oil/filter is probably another $10. A 1/4 can of brake cleaner $2.50. All in cost $22.50. The rest is pure profit.

How does one service a battery?  Clean the terminals?

Don't think American Subarus have this mandatory brake service, seems to be a Canada only thing for some reason. Looking forward to going DIY or Indy after warranty

That being said, have not had a spec of trouble so far, anyone else?

Yeah, work order says “inspected battery terminals and cleaned.” Didn’t look this time, but after the first service there was a huge glob of that corrosion prevention spray on there as well.

Like Blueprint posted, they also “Inspect engine and cabin air filters - replace if necessary.”  I didn’t look, but I’d have expected my engine air filter was totally fine. Didn’t stop them from throwing a new one on there for forty bucks. Cabin air filter was also $40, but at least that I’d expect to replace annually.

Like I’ve done with all my vehicles, I’ll suck it up until the warranty is done, then start doing it all myself.

Just a fine-tuning of an exhaust hanger when new - muffler would knock on the chassis from time to time.

They replaced the air filter at 1 year? You should have asked them for details on their filter recycling program, otherwise this seems like something that is no good for the environment.  ;D

I’ve heard that the justification is the salty, gritty roads up here. Not that they don’t get that in the northern U.S. too.  :P

Yup, 20,000 km and not a single issue. Oh wait - I did notice a few drips of water from the inner door panel after a torrential rain this summer. Not drips from the drain hole, but from the edge of the inner door panel. Apparently it was a thing where the inner plastic sheet isn’t sealed properly at the factory. Been an issue since 2018, but you’d think they’d have fixed it by 2023?

Apparently you can pull the door panel and reroute/reseal the plastic. Only saw it once, so am waiting to see if it happens again and something I’ll pursue with the dealer.

On the positive side, have really noticed the engine/drivetrain loosening up. Much less downshifting required for hills now.

I've been taking my STI to a well known local Indy Subie specialist since new. Service A is about 95 tax-in and they use Motul full synthetic. I forget what B costs but I know it wasn't 400+. Early on, I had to take it in to the dealer for a check engine light that ended being a bad O2 sensor. They had no issues with me taking it to an Indy for service. Not sure how it is with dealers out west though.

Service A was $95 tax-in at my dealer here too. Guess they make up for it on Service B.  :P

While it's under warranty, I just prefer to take it to the dealer. In case anything major does happen, I'd rather have the dealer pull up my name and see the full service history in their computer. Yes, a bunch of receipts from an indie would be just as valid, but I don't think would carry the same weight if I needed the dealer to go to bat for me with Subaru Canada over something contentious.

Same with me. I stuck with the dealer long-term with the Odyssey, until the store was sold to another group and shady practices started at the service dpt. After them declaring $4k's worth or repairs, my indie showed me how they had pumped oil out of the power steering... And the indie replaced the failed ball joint instead of the whole subassembly. When you get to the point of changing ball joints and such, like real mechanical work, indies are often better-equipped.

If you can find a good indie they are gold. Out here there is a shortage of mechanics, to the point that they quote ridiculous rates in the hopes that most turn them down.  ;D I was quoted $500 to replace two outer tie rods. A job that took me less than an hour in my garage with basic hand tools. The shop was booking three weeks out. With limited labour they must make more money swapping/selling tires and alignments.

That's pretty good. I seem to remember someone else on here saying service A was about 140 at their dealer.
