They don't have the maintenance minder codes like Honda, just a straight countdown with a generic maintenance reminder every 8k/6mnths. However, the recommended "maintenance" at 8k is just a bunch of visual inspections. Recommended oil and filter change interval is 16k but I definitely won't be waiting that long. Plan is to keep the van for at least 10 years, hopefully more.

Recommended oil and filter change interval is 16k

WOW!  No idea that was a Toyota thing.  How stupid.

Why? The marketing people get to advertise lower maintenance costs and the dealers get to sell new cars more often  ;)

With modern oils is 16k really too long?

The Golf has 15k intervals and from looking at used oil analyses on the forums, there seems to be little wear and lots of life left in the oil.

Yeah, it's a tough call.  TONS of evidence that modern synthetic oils can easily go 15k - 16k kms between oil changes and still have plenty of oil left.  Hasn't Ron actually sent some of his used oil out for testing, and that was the exact determination?

Then again, many engines in many vehicles are not tolerant of long interval changes (Ford 5.4L, I'm looking at you), and want their oil to be changed every 5000kms.  It can cause real problems down the road otherwise.

For myself, I tend to put on 8000 - 9000kms on my vehicles per year, resulting in an annual oil change with an interval of 8000kms.  That seems good enough to me.  Although, I'm doing a lot of longer drives to go MTBing, so that may increase my mileage significantly, forcing me to do an oil change in the spring, rather than my annual one in the fall.

Also, Mazda recommends 8000km service intervals on the CX-5.  Actually, just looking at their brochure, and Mazda recommends oil changes every 6 months, or 8000kms.  Seems excessive.  Whatever, I do every 8000kms, which ends up being annual.  Full synthetic oil in my car.

Visually, the oil that came out didn't look that bad. Not sure thats actually worth anything but just my observation. Since I'm doing most of the maintenance myself it costs ~$50 for oil and filter so the extra $100 a year is really a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Our old VW Diesel was every 16k km.   Both vehicles we do every 10K, just because it's easier to remember.   I've  always done 10K on all my vehicles (Exept bikes) and never had any problems but I don't buy vehicles with special maintenance required.   I don't see why any vehicles would need short intervals like 5K unless you race or hard work or something.

I just did a test drive in a Lexus IS300. When the salesperson told me 16k oil change interval, I went home and checked the manual on the internet.
The Gen Coupe had 6k oil changes.
I can understand that a V6 NA engine is less stressed than a turbo 4.

I think there is more to it since VW has a 16k interval for their turbo 4's. They do spec a specific oil certification though.

It's my understanding that the lubricity for long drain intervals has been easily achieved for many years. That is to say the engine protection part.

What has been more difficult to achieve is maintaining the emissions component of the oil formulation for the duration of the long drain interval. That is apparently harder to achieve than the actual protection component.

You'll often see new oil standards released in line with new emission standards (eg Euro IV), where little, if any, is changed in the lubricity department...with everything having to do with meeting the emission standard.

Hyundai 2.7L V6. Intake needs to be off to reach the back spark plugs. Amazingly, it was possible to order OEM wires from Hyundai, 15 years after the car was made, although it took them a week to arrive. A set of Denso iridium plugs was also installed.

Mileage is close to 160k. The engine has no rattles or any oil consumption. One of the original NGK plugs had signs of (side?) sparking on its insulator, although there was no code triggered. It works smoother now and will likely be more efficient too.

Oil and filter have been changed every 6k, first few times at the dealer and later strictly synthetic. If it wasn't for ON road salt, the car would likely last for another decade.

The Golf has 15k intervals and from looking at used oil analyses on the forums, there seems to be little wear and lots of life left in the oil.

Depends.  Is it 30 minute trips at highway speeds or 15 minute trips stop and go?  Vancouver Island or Ottawa?  Turbo or non turbo?  Gas or diesel?  So many variables.

For 2016 or newer Toyota models, oil changes are recommended annually or every 16,000 kms, whichever comes first. 2015 and older Toyota models should have their oil changed every 6 months or 8,000kms whichever occurs first. For other makes of vehicles, please consult your owner's manual.

https://www.newmarkettoyota.ca/oil-changes/

SO all of a sudden it's doubled  ???   Oh Toyota, you've gone down this road before.  ::) :P

16000 km oil change is an extended oil change interval and it's sole purpose is to meet a fleet CAFE target.  It's no different than the engine destroying mandated stop/start madness to hit a CAFE fleet target.  Both engine killers, but signs won't show till much later (200K km and up).

The MDX oil minder usually triggers around 11K km @10% left.  Tremor usually around 13K km @10% left.  I stick with those out of respect for the vehicle and the next owner.  The Tremor comes from the factory with Ford's standard crappy 5W20 oil.  I had that dumped out at the dealer at 5K km and sprung for their synthetic ever since.  You never know, I may be keeping this one.  Regardless, twin turbo and oil regulated VVT cams need clean oil and good oil pressure as in NO stop/start!

With low tension rings and fuel dilution? Balances out the better oils. I am typically 10k kms/yearly  in all the vehicles and use an EP (extended Protection) with beefier add packs to cover my ass.

I go 8-10k kms on any of our vehicles even with synthetic oil. To me its cheap insurance, call me old school, paranoid, but I've had many a vehicle past 250k kms with no engine issues.
Lighten up Francis.....

0W8 is coming..

I heard of someone bringing a new Crown for an oil change. The engine had a 0W8 label. Obviously the dealer used what they had stocked - the good "old" 16 weight...

That's right.  One needs to be careful.  Mobil I for example has two 0W20s. One costs more and is more of an actual syn oil.

Back in 2015 the only actual syn oil from Mobil 1 was 0W40 Eurospec at least at the Esso distributor.  Crappy had it too.  The alternative was their 0W20 kind of synthetic.

It's in the owner's manual...16 weight fine if 8 not available.
