Nice work Firm!

Completely agree 1FGC, your 1 series, similar to Bella's 3 series just rides so good, firm yet not harsh & the inline 6 is turbine smooth.

Ditto.  I really enjoyed driving the 1er on PEI last week, doing one of the day-trip scenic drives.

Not my car but replaced the rear shocks on my uncle's 2007 Odyssey. First time I've done any real wrenching in a while other than tire swaps, lol. It was probably one of the easiest shock replacement jobs I've done. Good job Honda for making that easy. They don't drive it much anymore but it has over 300k and it's still pretty clean. My uncle is getting it ready for my nephew as he's going through the licensing process now.

I've never driven a 1-series but I assume it drives like a tidier E9x. I definitely wouldn't be opposed to having one, preferably a late 135i.

Good way to describe it.  Drives very similar to the 2011 328i I had, although that one was AWD.  I just like the lighter feeling of the 1, and the looks.  I'm also a little nostalgic about them because the 2008 I had was my first nice, new car.  The 135i is an absolute beast, but from what I recall the engine can be a nightmare once the mileage piles on.  Better to get a modern M240i if the budget allows.  A colleague has a nice black 2018 and it's probably my future upgrade path.  I'd miss the hydraulic steering rack, though.

Interesting. I always thought the Odyssey had the same basic suspension setup as the Ridgeline. But it looks like separate coils and shocks where the Ridgeline uses struts. I prefer the separate components.

Went to go do the brakes on the S8.

NOPE!  Need VCDS (or similar software) to unwind the rear caliper/electronic parking brakes.

Then you need to tell the car how thick the new pads are via same software then "initialize" the electronic parking brake.

Isn't this kind of standard procedure for any car with electronic parking brake?

Can do it on Lexus with no software via a combination of button pushes. I presume Toyota too (but don't know for sure).

So now I either pay someone to do it....Or buy software.

It's not better of course but not a big surprise. No friends close by with an OBDeleven or equivalent?
I recall reading that on some makes/models/years you can do it by applying 12v DC directly to the motor connector....?! I'm sure you checked for work arounds... ;)

Last week I thought about getting an OBD2 with programing capabilities as it may come in handy at times.

For VW family and newish BMWs, OBDeleven seems to be a good tool to have around. Carly is another one I looked at and while it does not have as deep programing capabilities as OBDeleven, for about $15 more per year it would cover any brand they support.

It all started with an annoying "feature" on the BMW with the auto door locks - it automatically locks but it doesn't automatically unlock when parked. The iDrive equipped cars can be programmed as such but non-iDrive don't have the menu option so you have to set it through software.

Most can be done by applying 12V to the motor, so there's likely a way even with the S8. That said, if you're going to own something like that long term, it probably pays to have the software anyway.

Did an F-150 the other day with electronic rear parking brake. There's a service mode you select in the gauge cluster menu - couldn't be simpler.

Right? If you're going to add something like that make it easy to put in service mode.

But not the Germans....let's make it more complex for no good reason.

Was living in Germany one winter, and it seemed to me Germans are not big DIY vehicle maintenance people. The trades are very strong there, and was pretty much expected you take your vehicle to a proper shop

I get the impression most of Europe is like that. The US being the other extreme where you'll regularly see people doing pretty major jobs in the AutoZone parking lot like it's nothing. Canada being the middle ground...

Europeans live in tiny spaces.  Few have a private garage let alone a detached house.

I am the only person I know that still changes oil and filter on a car and that is only once a year sometimes once every two years.  I only swap tires because I have lots of indoor garage space and a nice clean level smooth service for the jack.
