You could certainly do worse "alternate transportation" than an LS.

Lotsa haters here!

Yep. I'd argue the "old" V8 LS with a conventional auto and proper hydraulic steering offers far more fun and engagement than 90% of new CUVs sold today. You know, the 4 cyl + CVT kind of appliances. Gas and upkeep costs are a different subject (although ppl manage to spend more on new cars at the dealer) but as far as daily driving enjoyment goes, there aren't many cars that can out-compete the good old LS.

Even on the latter front. A nice used LS460 is what, ~$15K, a new 4-cyl CVT penalty box is ~$35K+. Takes a lot of extra gas an repairs to close that gap.

The Hire would know that market way better than I would....But a quick scan on the local kijiji I see about 7-8 listed with a range of $11K (230km) to $25K (83km), decent mid-rand looks to be maybe $15-17K.

Here's one with reasonable kms on it for $17K, appears to be a higher trim level, horrible photos:
https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/city-of-toronto/2007-lexus-ls460l-executive-package-fully-loaded/1645780464

Another one, higher kms and probably a base model...but looks clean, $11K.

Another with decent kms, sketch dealer, one owner though and looks pretty tidy. $13K

Seems to be a lot more cheap LS's out east than in Alberta for some reason

Might have something to do with the early ones being RWD, not super practical in the land of ice

Alberta is generally more pricey in the used market.

Lexus is one of the  brand that went up quite a bit because on Covid.  Before all this happen there was quite a bit of choices in the used market, now it's slim picking.

Wasn't that LS RWD and someone from his team bought it already?

I thought it was AWD...though he may have had multiple LS go through that place.

Also, I don't see the ad anymore so it's likely sold.

Yeah that one was an ‘08 RWD and it was snapped up fast by another team member.

Sub $15k LS460s do exist but plenty of them are clapped out and absolutely rotten underneath. For some reason the bodies don’t really rust but the frames rot pretty hard if not taken care of. I’ll take a pic of one of mine/my mom’s next time they’re up on the hoist to show what a minty example looks like.

Expect to spend $20ish for a clean 09+ AWD with air ride with lower miles.

Replaced yet another headlight bulb on the Golf. This time it was the driver's side, so I had to remove 4 torx screws from the wheel fender to access it from behind.

This is the 4th bulb in 5 years. I've changed one in the Highlander early on in that time frame.

Been looking for 2013+, with particular attention to 2015-2017 and there's basically none for sale.

Mine’s been good. In 13 years I’ve only replaced the headlight bulbs and a license plate bulb.

But just yesterday I got a bulb warning to Check Front Side Marker Light! Checked it and it was fine. Figured maybe it was on its way out, so bought a new one for 5 bucks and replaced it. Still worked fine and still had the warning on the dash… ::)

Figured I was in for some nightmare FGC electrical glitch, so went on the interwebs to see if anyone else had had the same problem. Of course someone did!  ;D

Turns out it’s not a glitch at all. There’s a tiny bulb inside the headlight housing that I didn’t even know existed, and sure enough, it’s burned out. Another $5 peanut bulb and it’s super easy to replace.

Since I don't have auto lights I just leave them on all the time. Surely that is a contributor.

But I do the same with the Highlander sooooo...

I'd guess if you check your running voltage at the headlights the Golf is higher. Apparently it doesn't take much extra voltage to shorten bulb life dramatically

The 'extra bright' halogen bulb upgrades can similarly have short lives
