Well, my self-restraint was short lived.... Triggered by the rising prices, I pulled the trigger on the cooling system refresh on the BMW and ordered the parts last week. Got them installed yesterday - water pump, thermostat, hoses. A bit of a setback with the radiator because it was damaged out of the box so ended up sending it back for replacement. Got lucky (at least I hope) because it was the last one in stock, which now is zero, and I hope it's mine since they say "at warehouse" to be delivered on Wed. I will have confirmation on Monday I guess when will ship out. I hope this one is not damaged, but will see.

On a side note, my good friend got an almost identical one today for his son (which I taught how to drive manual and he got hooked on this car).  He absolutely lucked out finding a two-owner (brothers), beautiful unit with only 94K km on the clock, same color combo as mine (Black with Chestnut Brown interior), just with navi and few more goodies. The car is in absolute mint condition and he got it for only $11.500 which to me it's a very good deal in this market. The seller spent $2000+ to certify it and he did not raise the price by one cent....
The car doesn't need anything other than fresh fluids, engine filter and new ground cables. A grand total of one (1) paint chip on the body and a bit of wear on the driver's door handle....
Drove the car back home from Woodstock (my buddy doesn't drive manual yet) and it drives beautifully. Needless to say, I was more excited than them for this find.

Good find. Proof that good deals still exist.

Ordered my tires through Costco.  Blizzaks should be here by the end of the month.

Junior and I did the brakes on the Civic this weekend. Front pads and rotors and rear drums and shoes. Also bled the system afterward to get fresh fluid in there. The old stuff came out looking like used motor oil. Front rotors were scored terribly; someone must have previously worn pads down to the metal.

This was the first time I’ve ever dealt with drums/shoes. What a royal pain in the ass compared to rotors/calipers.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

When I was younger practically every american vehicle had rear drums and I got really good at it, but overall they suck.  Wheel cylinders leak and ruin the shoes, auto adjusters stop working in bad climates and one wheel would always lock up before the other.  Basically a big parking brake.

Yep, drums can be a real pain. Lower wear rate than a disc/pad setup, but leaking wheel cylinders and seized adjusters more than make up for that. I have a couple of those spring spreader tools, they're a big help if you're doing drums regularly.

Course, now a lot of cars will have rear discs, but with an electronic parking brake built into the calipers - that's a new level of irritation.

That reminds me, we haven't heard from Rupert in quite a while.  He loved those drum brakes. :-\

I just bought a used set of Goodyear Ultra-Grip Ice tires for the pickup.  265-70R17 for $250, not too badly worn.   The very old BFG's were looking scary and had very little grip.

Drums on the back of a small fwd car aren't so bad. You might make it through its whole life with never changing them.

I'd think I'd rather just have drums on a small fwd car than discs with parking-brake drums inside as well.

Largely because they hardly contact.    Essentially the fronts are stopping the vehicle.

You've got to love simple, old cars when you have to work on them. I replaced the blower fan on the Mitsubishi today and it took all 15-20 min to do it without rushing. Two clips, three screws and plenty of space to work with.
The not so good part is that the original blower fan is not very serviceable as it's kind of encapsulated and can't be fully taken apart for cleaning. I tried to clean as much as I could and while much better, it was still making some noise so I decided to get a new one. 15.5 years of service is very reasonable in my books.

The BMW got a very thorough rustproofing done today with the non-drip Rust Cure Formula 3000 product.
Having it thoroughly washed, degreased and cleaned plus having all coverings removed allowed the guy to reach and touch every crevice of the body.
Now I have piece of mind that I did everything I could to extend its life as much as possible.
Price was a very reasonable $140 and the guy did an outstanding job as far as I'm concerned. He owns an E46 and he's very familiar with BMWs; he also noted that the car has little rust for its age.

The GTI goes to the same place in few days and the Outlander after.

Well I'm not surprised because he flips cars often...

But yea, long term this car could be costly.

Lol, far from it.

More like, an unattainable dream car that's actually a dream car has become available. Need to make room for an upgrade, and this is the one that makes the most sense.
