Brought home a friend for the Aston and Porsche... embarking on an Italian car project at the shop. Bought a stallion heavily under market and going to build one of my dream cars with it.

More details to come, but she's home!

A stallion - so that would be a Ferrari, then?

Sounds like a great adventure indeed.  Just please don't put a LS engine in it.  LOL

No no, motor will remain stock and numbers matching. Apparently having "no stories" is a big thing with these hoopties.

You know I wonder if the last generation Viper's were as prone to these stories.  What with it having traction and stability control and not having an exhaust that tries to burn you.

Ordered basic BT/USB radio replacement for the Saturn SW2, only 1 compatible model (not touch screen) was stock and the harness kit fall in back order after I placed my order...!  :P

Also bought 9006 halogen substitute LED low beam kit, if it works well, may buy later 9005 high beam kit.

It was quick!
Crutchfield (ON) delivered already.
Ess K Customs (SK) shipped, expected Thursday.
Gone but not forgotten in chronological order: 2019 Volt, 2013 Volt, 2014 Spark EV, 2012 Volt and many others before...

Had the Odyssey appraised yesterday for some body work. The van will be 10 y.o. next month; I was planning to keep it 8 years, but wife wanted to keep it longer. We've had it since new, it only has 80,000 km and is super-clean, but our pavers don't allow for yearly oil showers so now rust is showing its ugly head. The bottom lead corner of the left rear fender has already been touched-up by the dealer's bodyshop, but rust is out again and brought friends in the bottom of both left doors. Plus, rust also showed up in the right rear fender.

The indie shop gave me two quotes: $2,700 for sandblast, fiberglass filler and partial repaint, or $3,600 for a full-metal job. Seems par for the course, any opinions guys?

The shop recommends ... the cheaper option, especially if we intend to trade in the van sooner than later. Indeed, wife FINALLY saw the light and agreed to consider some form of PHEV SUV (kids are 18, 20 and 24, all still living at home - we still need a 5-seater, but no stroller room required  ;D).

Resale value at the moment is $16k according to Trader's tool, and that appears right, for an "excellent" vehicle. "Fair" is $14k, so I guess we make up for the repair at resale. In any case, with inventories being what they are, the van needs to get through at least one other winter without the rust getting worse, and the job is guaranteed.

I'd say if you are planning on keeping it longer term, just pay the extra for the full metal job, but if you are trading in for a new PHEV in the next year or so, just get the cheaper fiberglass filler done.  It's too bad you can't use undercoating to keep this at bay but 10 years is a decent run without having too much rust issues.

Those quotes honestly feel fairy reasonable given the amount of time required to address rust properly and then blend the paint.

Thanks guys! The Ody's door tracks allow a near full-paint of the rear fenders with natural "borders", while the sliders can be painted up to the rub strips. Driver's door is just the bottom, sight unseen but needs to be adressed.

What was surprising when my parents did quotes for rust repair for their 09 odyssey was how expensive it was to do the door, compared to the quarter panels.

Your quote seems in line with what we got here in NB - I think with the way the car market is it may be worth just doing and keeping the vehicle a few years until supply stabilizes.

I’ve been wondering the same about rust. The Yukon is starting to show some on all four fenders now. I tried to fix it up myself, but the paint is already flaking off again. I think part of my problem is that most of the mounts and supports for the plastic bumpers are broken. All the lower attachments get snapped off from nosing up into icy snow banks and such.

The bumpers stay on the truck just fine, but I think they move around enough to rub on the metal fenders as it goes down the road. I looked into replacing all that mounting stuff and got up to US$500 before I gave up. And that was just for the front. Rear is broken too, and I can actually hear it flapping a bit back there when there’s a big crosswind.

I think I’ll take it for an estimate, just to see. I plan on keeping the beast forever, so might be worth it to get a proper fix. But is there ever such a thing as a proper fix for rust on an 11-year-old vehicle? If I spend several thousand, I’d expect at least five rust-free years out of it. Maybe I’m dreaming.

A properly executed fix should last 5 years, no problem. That said, some of it is on the owner to maintain....Keep it clean when possible, keep it waxed, and for areas that trap water (like the gap between the plastic bumper and the fender) shoot some rust preventing oil (Formula 300, Fluid Film, Krown, etc) in there a few times a year.

Spray the entire lower half (or all) with line-x. That will buy you at least 5 years. Or just let it rust gracefully. It's called patina. ;D

I have thought about that.  ;D

If the Yukon was black, I’d do it for sure. Looks like they also do custom colours? If I could get a pretty close match, I might just do it. Yukon currently has 265,000 km IIRC. Would like to drive it to 2030, at least, so maybe  450,000 km by then? Maybe optimistic, but not impossible.

I did it with an old Toyota 4x4 truck. In the end it was just bed liner, no sheet metal.

I figure at that vehicle age/mileage you're basically preserving its utility to you.  If Line-X gets you to 450,000km I'd do it in a heartbeat.

^^ Yeah, I’m not too fussy about a utility vehicle like that. Function over form!

But my wife drives it too, and I’m not so sure she’d be as keen on the bedliner look. But, was just checking out the Calgary Line-X website and see they’ve done lots of nice work. Would be nice to cover the fenders and rocker panels without it looking too hillbilly.
