When I had my Triumph Spitfire years ago I asked the shop to torque correctly and not to use the air tools. Even left a manual torque wrench in the car for them. They sort of rolled their eyes a bit and but promised they would.

This is another pet peeve of mine with shops - they say "yes, of course" to whatever you ask them to do on the car before you go in and then they do whatever they want or think is "best" because they know better. Do they? If so, why did they agree in the first place and did not say anything?
More so, they don't even ask if it's OK to make whatever change because of whatever reasons or they don't even tell you they've done something else than what was agreed to.... If you ask questions or ask them to acknowledge that they've done exactly what was agreed to they roll the eyes and think you are a PITA. I find hard to swallow this attitude and it's a good reason not to return to such shop.

Especially when I am the customer. I offered to pay extra for no air tools if needed.

Did an oil change on the GTI today.

I think I found a good, honest and knowledgeable VW/Audi mechanic 10 min away from my place.

He is highly recommended and praised by the local vwvortex crowd so I thought I would give it a try and I was not disappointed. Very reasonable priced too - $125+tax for the oil change with Liqui Moly plus quick service and no fooling around.
In and out in less than an hour (with appointment) including 10-15 min idling for the engine flush, OBD reading and a bit of chatting while he was doing all that.

Engine flush?

Cleaning if you wish... This https://germanparts.ca/parts/lm7712-engine-flush-liqui-moly-pro-line-engine-flush-500ml/

And I got a can of this too.... https://germanparts.ca/parts/lm7711-jectron-liqui-moly-jectron-cleaner-300ml/

He also said that at my mileage I should not need it but if I want to, it won't hurt either.

BTW his prices are lower than germanparts. ca too.

I see. I don't have any experience with this stuff (although I do have a can somewhere LOL). The Jectron though works beautifully on direct injectors and many other things.

I was surprised that these in a 15" have roughly the same ride quality as the 17" Pirelli P7+ that I'm running in the summer.   I think they need to stiffen the sidewall of the blizzak to get them to have an H-rating.  Probably also shows how good of a tire the P7 with respect to ride comfort.

Glad you mentioned this. I went from 18's (Primacy A/S) down to 16's (X-Ice Snow) on the Rolla and noticed the same thing. I even ran V rated winters on the GTI and the XIS has a really good feel and I'd guess even better than many regular A/S tires.

Winter tires have come a very long way.

So you all are saying downsizing in rim size for winters isn't making a difference as far as ride comfort goes? May as well stick with the original 17" or 18" sizing?

I definitely get a smoother ride with my 17" winters than my 18" performance tires.

I'd say in my case and probably tortoise's, that is true or little enough that it is hardly noticeable. Of course it will be a case by case depending on what your summer and winter tires are. And yes, having extra sidewall for all those winter potholes is a nice thing.

The ride on our MDX is definitely more compliant with 18" winters vs the 20" stock. Also, less tramlining on the 407 grooves (why do they have those?). However, also definitely not as sharp in the corners.

I think if I went with 17" WS-90's the ride would be harsher than the P7's, considering that there wasn't a noticeable difference in going from 17"->15".

I did notice less weight in the steering and a slower turn-in response.  Both of those are to be expected.

The Audi is 17" summer, 16" winter - I would have kept my 15" Golf winter kit but 16" is the smallest fitment over the front brakes.

Odyssey already has tons of sidewall, so 17" - 17"

Daughter's Accent is 16" summer, 14" winter - tiny tires, big change between the two oem kits. Steering looser on the snows, turn-in less precise, but with this car you want all the sidewall you can get. My floor jack barely slides underneath, it's probably closer to the ground than the TR6.
