Got my car back this morning.  Apparently, the OEM Mazda rotors were rotted, in part from sitting for 18 months but also because OEM garbage.  Car was bought new in 2017 and only has 38,000 kms.   The stopping difference with new pads and rotors was startling.  Winters are now on and I’m good to go for whatever comes at us.  Bring it!

This is the first time I've ever heard Mazda OE brakes being garbage.

I think she means garbage in terms of corrosion. Brake performance was fine on both our previous Mazdas but damn did they rust out quickly.

Swapped the tires on the Audi, always a fun job with ze Germans using bolts instead of nuts, and barely any hub to hold the wheel up. Good thing they supply the plastic guide rod in the tire tool kit.

Fun fact: the oem center caps are made up of nine parts. Nine. Each.

Swapped the tires on the Odyssey, installed winter wiper blades and installed the replacement outer passenger taillight module I had received from RockAuto - 5 min job.

Really?
Lots of early rear brake jobs. I've seen them needed as early as 30000 kms.

Good to know. I guess so many people are talking about rusted fenders that I missed it.

Finally, over the weekend the M got tucked into her jammies for the winter.  (Remind me again why we choose to live in a place where we can't enjoy our toys year round?  :'( )

The Jetta is overdue for its snow boots, but it's going in for a recall (surprise surprise!) next week and part of the free maintenance package includes a tire rotation.  Dealer said to just bring 'em in and they'll put 'em on for me.

I'm going the opposite way this winter... SLK hasn't sold, (though I did receive an offer ($6,500 less than asking) yesterday from a gentleman who came to see it, so hard pass on that!!) so I'm going to pick up winter boots for it this afternoon (used of Kijiji) and I'm going to drive it on nicer days. Heading to Toronto this weekend with Bella & wanted to take it down, but the summer shoes it's dicey as :censor:, so for $800 I'm getting a set of lightly used 17" winter alloys and tires that work for the car, correct bore sizing, offset, bolt pattern, etc  ;D

We're likely doing our cars this weekend.

I keep reminding myself (and will for the next several months) why I don't have a fun car will AWD.

I'm still eyeing Audi RS3s.

Well since we got snow, winter tired it.  Tires are almost exactly 10 yrs old...mfg date 35th week 2011.  Still have more than 50% tread left.  Takes 11 minutes per side to swap 'em.  ;D  NASCAR here I (don't) come!

Now wait for the tire experts to comment  ;)

^^ As a tire expert I would scrap them  ;D

But, seriously, these aren't safe for highway use anymore. Surface streets at 40 km/h, maybe, but otherwise they are ticking time bombs.

I'd probably run those tires on an inner city runabout. Maybe not a highway commuter. Any visible cracking?

Iunno. I've got some pretty old tires around....I'd be giving them a very good inspection and if I see any cracking, then yeah, they're not good. If there's no cracking, I am not too worried about it.
That said, at 10 years old, the rubber has degraded, so performance (grip & comfort) won't be what it once was.

Good quality tires, stored properly (indoors and covered) tend to do OK. I've got some 10+ year old tires that are absolutely crack free and I have zero stress over driving on them. I've also seen some 10 year old tires (like the 2011 date code off-brand units currently on the SLK) that are absolutely a hazard.

Yeah, there is no way I would be taking that up to highway speeds on those tires.
Lighten up Francis.....
