It makes kind of a hard coating, not sure how well it lasts

I've had good luck with POR instead, using a kit with the metal prep

Whoohoo!  Truck "oil leak" wasn't the turbos!  Valve cover gasket and the vacuum pump or something...under $200ish for parts, way less labour than the turbo's would've been.  Also had them to a filter/trans flush and refill and transfer case fluid replacement.   ;D  Yay!!

Next project: get the cab corners fixed up.  Just have to decide if I do it cheap (local shop or maybe fiberglass and you tube tutorials! lol) or not cheap (cut out and full replacement).

Anyone ever used phosphoric acid on rust?  Can you paint right over it or does it need to be washed off after you've dissolved all the rust (thinking of the back of the rocker panels).

My dad used to use raw phosphoric acid, seemed to work fine. I use the branded 'rust converter' for whatever it's called (I am pretty sure it's just phosphoric acid, smells like it), that one claims you can prime right over it after it's dried.

I have a couple of small rust spots on the edge of the doors that I wanted to treat somehow, sand / paint? What's the best way to do it?  I don't mind if the paint isn't 100%, it's getting wrapped anyway.

Post a pic, hard to give you any decent direction on how to handle it without seeing it.

Yesterday I grab the CT Ram 1500 from the corp facility where it was sitting since Covid hit in March 2020. Left the DTS there and will use the Ram for a few weeks since I am working on a landscape project at home and need a proper pickup bed. Old girl fired right up after sitting untouched for 15 months...It's a great truck, but driving it really makes just about anything else feel super refined.

Were the brake discs rusty (at least grumpy) after sitting for so long?
Gone but not forgotten in chronological order: 2019 Volt, 2013 Volt, 2014 Spark EV, 2012 Volt and many others before...

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, but then am guessing this was stored indoors & that made for less issues.

Yeah, it was indoors in a heated/ventilated shop. No rotor corrosion or anything that I noticed. It does have a nice set of PowerStop brakes as well, which are Zinc coated and really helps keep the corrosion down (on the non-contact surfaces at least)

Ok, it makes sense since it is a garage queen  :rofl2: (no offence)

I'm asking because most EVs with dynamic braking, the friction brake are much less solicited if compared to ICE, so an annual brake cleaning/lubrification is mandatory to avoid premature brake replacement due being rusted or uneven wear out...

Yeah, that's an issue for sure. Pad separation (where the friction material separates from the backing plate) was a significant issue on some EVs, Toyota I think, because the pads rarely got warm enough to get the moisture out.

There's a Toronto based company that makes Galvanized backing plates to avoid that and they have a bit of a niche following with EV owners:

Don't know why I didn't think of that.  Probably easier than trying to get rid of the rust and spraying box liner over it.  Might even last longer...could probably do box liner over POR too.  Double protection.

Cdn Tire sell it?  Guess I could look, see if it's on the website eh?  :P :bang:

Well not as low as I thought all things considered, then again I had no idea how many litres of trans fluid were needed, how much the new filter screen was...still cheaper than turbo seals etc.  I wonder if the dealer would've charged labour for both the trans/valve cover separately too...probably. And these guys are $45/hr cheaper than the dealer.

Probably added another 10 yrs to its life.  ;D

That’s not terrible considering you likely won’t have to do that again.

Found out too that the turbos on the 2013 were updated and not as prone to shi#ting the bed like 11-12's.  Fingers crossed!

My GM trucks were like 6-8L....that seems like a lot, but that also includes the cooler and lines

He had the transmission flushed. 14L would be about right.

Took the Civic for an oil change last week at my cheap Indy (I have two Indy's I go to - a cheap one for the Civic, and an expensive one for the Tundra).  $45 for a conventional oil/filter change.  I considered doing it myself, but then realized that I'd just end up with a huge mess on my driveway, and figured its easier to just drop the car off.  The shop is a 5 minute walk away from my work, so it's awfully convenient.

That's now nothing but oil changes and tires for the Civic since we got it safetied over a year ago.  It's a great little beater.

Yeah, at that price I ain't crawling under the car to do an oil change  :rofl2:

Glad it's working out for you!
