It likely takes a number of mechanics to keep his fleet up and running.

And who do you think keeps TheHires cars up and running??   ;D
I'm sure he has a "guy" but he strikes me as the hands on type.

I very much appreciate the confidence, and while I know things, I am not hands on in the slightest. You're probably mixing me up with Firm, that other guy on here who buys junk often.  :)

I think Leno has a staff of people who manage his collection of cars.  It likely takes a number of mechanics to keep his fleet up and running.

The Odyssey just went through a service odyssey.

The Ody has one of those service indicators than determines what service is required and when. Usually, it trips around the one year mark, good for timely oil changes, but with the pandemic it did not bring up anything last summer. My wife was off work for about three months, but otherwise the Ody ran its usual errands. So I decided to let the thing do what it does and see when it'll come calling. It did late February, and I was pretty surprised to get a service appointment at the dealer right away.

The van had developped a "clunk" in front, driver's side, and I suspected a ball joint, even though the van only has 82,000 km. Also the very few times it was parked in the cold, it would squeak on start-up, accessory belt suspect. Plus, tech service bulletin from Honda needed to be adressed for galvanitic corrosion on tailgate trim. And "Service B" as per the car's service reminder.

The dealership has one of these "drive-in" bays for service appointments, but it felt weird from the start as the advisor's area had been rearranged. I've been taking my business to this dealer since 1995, know the faces and names but except for the hot 40-ish blonde service advisor, all new faces. My service advisor was the other one - a not confidence-inspiring middle-aged fake blonde "Los tabarnacos" type of lady that had to be reminded I was here for my "Service B" - it was right there on the call notes. She went to the drive-in bay to check the corrosion on the "hayon" (hatch) - but she was looking at the hood. I had to go point at the right part.

Doesn't know what to do with my tech bulletin, shows it to the new head of service - who was probably in high school when my van was made - and the guy claims to never have seen this letter. I almost walked out to check if this was still a Honda franchise. Can't do a thing with that, he says, take it to Honda Canada he says, and I will.

Diagnostics for my clunk and squeak will run at 122$/hr, and are not deductible from the repairs. Nice, wasn't that way the last time. Heck a few years ago I actually worked with forums and the great service advisor to diagnose a top-plate issue with the front struts, which became a service bulletin in the US. Eons ago.

The "limo" driver is also new. Wears a flannel hunter's vest, classy. Where's the previous smiling retired guy in suits? The "limo" is a same-year, same-colour Ody as mine. Bunch of lights lit up in the dash, service indicator says "Oil 5%" and I know the "13" means transmission oil is due. TPMS light is on for good measure. The guy knows where to drive me, but makes a wrong turn on the very first turn. Van is dirty, has tons of clunks and noises. I got home. Phew.

Later I get the call from Los Blondie. Ball joint is shot, car needs a full table sub-assembly replacement, 1,500$ + tax. The squeak - did not happen in more than a few days - comes from the power steering pump they say, oil low they say, rack and pinion has a leak they say, 1,900$ + tax. Nope, do the "Service B", don't touch the rest, let me think about that. Somehow I don't trust this to be a 4k$ service.

When I pick up the car, it's written on the invoice that the car is dangerous and can't be driven. With diagnostics and new filters the Service B ran up a 600$+ tab, never seen that before. I drive home, park the van in the garage, tell the wife to use the pressie, and hit the internet.

First stop: Rockauto. The ball joint exists as a stand-alone part. Which means, it can be replaced without removing the whole shabang - that is also available as a pre-assembled rebuild for less than 200$. Rack and pinion is not cheap at 600$. Next stop, odyclub.com. Similar dealer stories about sub-assemblies being proposed when just a ball joint is needed. A hydraulic press is required to replace the ball joint, probably not in the dealer's shop inventory. Steering rack requires dropping the entire front subframe two inches, oh-ho.

Time to call Indy.

The little indy place I discovered when my daughter ripped up the carboard undertray off her Accent looks like a set from FBI. You'd never know there was a sketchy place like this in our 'burb. But they have a great reputation, don't oversell and bill at 70$/hr. It's a great place for the greasy bits.

Appointment made for Monday morning, instructed to leave the van prior to the curfew on Sunday evening. They are used to ball-joint jobs and have the required press. They say they will look at the steering rack issue but usually refer their clients to a local specialist for these rather specialized jobs. I looked them up online, you punch in your car info and you get an estimate for parts and labour off the website - 1,600$ in my case. Still dear.

The mechanic calls me up midday, says the van is in terrific shape, all bushings are great but the ball joint is indeed shot. 245$ + tax. Can't find a leak on the rack and pinion, suspects the dealer actually removed oil from suspect traces - apparently trending at local dealerships. Hum. Left the van an extra hour outside in the cold, still no squeaks. Can't find any oil residue around the rack.

The van did squeal in the past, so I'll keep watch on the oil level. There are no spots in the garage where the van has been parking since new.

So basically my 4,000$ "stealership" estimate required a 266$ tx incl. repair job. No more clunks.

Think I can copy-paste these two posts in the service satisfaction feedback email I received?

Wow Blueprint, that is quite the adventure.  I always question everything that is suggested by the dealer.  I know they need to make money but repairing things that aren't broken is down right criminal in my book.  If I were you I'd call up the service manager or dealer GM and tell them this story and ask that they do better.  This is not a way to keep a customer.

The bad part is that probably half the people they do this on it works and the other half do as you did and get a second opinion.

Yuck. Cool story though

Have not had a great experience with both Honda dealers we've used here either. Took the old CRV in for airbag recalls and both gave us arms length lists of made up work that "needed" done. One had my wife panicked to the point she called and had me rush over for 'something that had to be done IMMEDIATELY'. Turned out to be a slight oil leak from a sensor (one which did not even drip on the floor). Held my sh*t together and politely said no thanks, but it pissed me off no end. Have a list somewhere the other dealer gave us, pages and pages of things like that, expensive fixes for minor problems on a $2000 car

The GM dealer I take my Vibe (which is just as old a car) has been worlds better by comparison, and the Lexus dealer has been great so far, both of them you have to talk into extra servicing. I can see people sticking with certain brands just for the dealer part of it

I don't know when it happened, but it seems a lot of dealerships have gone from charging a premium to straight up ripping people off.

Here's a photo of a quote given to a guy selling my Highlander.   It involves:

Front lower control arms
A high pressure power steering line (that didn't need to be done)
Rear brakes, bearings and backing plate
A heat shield repair.

$5200 + tax.  I was able to get it to pass a safety for $1500, taxes in.

Noticed the local dealer has a 2019 Golf Execline for sale for only $27,000. A brand new 2021 Golf Highline (this is the highest trim now) is only $28,000 and comes with free 3 year maintenance. WTF?
Would you ever consider a new VW GLI?  It offers probably the best value in VW's lineup.  You'll be giving up some cargo space but you'd be gaining a more usable back seat and the truck space is very generous.

Has to be some people this works on

Found the list the one Honda dealer gave us, $2723, including over a grand for gasket fixes. Every fluid in the car, fuel system flush, alignment, windshield. Also $250.00 for spark plugs that I had  replaced the previous year, and $200 for 'additional time and parts'.

Would not have fixed the check engine light it actually had, that would have been extra

Nothing needed to be done, zero, we were just there for an airbag recall

Maybe it pushes some people driving older vehicles into the new car sales office

Good job finding a reputable indy to take care of it for you. I really would call the GM or service manager at the dealership and speak to them about your experience and compared to how it was in the past.

$950 part cost for control arms?  WTF?  I have no idea what year your Highlander is, but I searched on partsource.ca for a 2010 Highlander, and came up with $62.04/side for lower control arms.

2007.

And the AC Delco control arms were $70.  It need need ball joints on top of that, they were an extra $40 each.

Not including shipping though, that was another $40.

Still. Not even close to their prices.
