Plenty of low mileage 2019 used wagons for around 20, but usually ex rentals

Same here. Lots of base model rentals. Funny thing, I'm having a hard time giving up dual zone climate control so that takes them off the list.

You could get into a 2017 GTI for that price range with ~65k km.  I think you'd like the Mk7.

I've thought about that a couple of times. Would just need to decide if I wanted to go back into carbon cleaning, DSG flushes, etc again but the GTI is such a great package.

Yeah. If I were in your position I'd be asking Patrick if he is still planning of trading in that red sportwagen this spring.

Good tip. I'll think seriously about that and maybe drop Patrick a DM.

Considering you got 12 years out of your current GTI I don't see why you wouldn't just get one of the new ones coming out.  Sure it's $40K but with how long you drive them you certainly get your moneys worth out of them.

I always knew you were a great person so thanks for the gift of $15K to fund the used new car. Wait, just checked and it comes out to $45K (can't forget those taxes) so would you mind upping it to $20K please and thinks.  :-*

What about the V60? or V90. Used values are reasonable.

A quick look on AT and there are only seven V60 under $30K in Ontario and none I would buy. Actually thought there would be more.

Lexus CT 200 can be had for your budget.

But, too small?  To slow?  Otherwise a pretty compelling package IMO.

Noticed the local dealer has a 2019 Golf Execline for sale for only $27,000. A brand new 2021 Golf Highline (this is the highest trim now) is only $28,000 and comes with free 3 year maintenance. WTF?

PDI and fees will make it quite a bit more.  But yeah, that's :censor:.

That is the magic of the used market, values are high right now and sometimes they make no sense at all.

I've noticed that and have seen (online) a couple of nice models listed. The trunk might be tight for our overloaded camping trips as we already fill the GTI with the seats down. Of course, so does the Prius Prime and if I was going to go slow, I'll take the one that uses hardly any gas plus the trunk is a good size. Even the 2018 Camry (2.5L and 8 speed) gets 6/100 hwy and a 900+ km cruising range and can be found for the same money. Which is funny as used Camry isn't much more than a used Corolla (generally speaking).

Then I notice things like a 2016 ES350 for the same money and all of a sudden it becomes a game of would you rather.

Maybe Ron can chime in and convince you to buy a used Lexus LS...?

It's got a rear main leak, that's it? Throw a board under it in the garage/driveway and check the oil more frequently, problem solved. Seriously, if the rest of the car still drives well and there are no other drivability or safety issues, why toss it for a lousy oil leak? Unless I am missing something here and it's just pissing oil out everywhere....

If the PCV is a known issue and creates excess pressure in the crankcase, replace that. It might at least reduce the pressure and therefore reduce the leakage.

If its a new leak you could try some seal conditioner.

I had my rear axle seals leaking pretty badly and the shop I went to wanted to change all the seals for something like a grand. I checked closer and the diff vent was plugged, changed that out and the leak stopped

That being said I had a front main fail, the pcv was fine and oil was pouring out like water, nothing to do but change it

Yeah, my understanding is that once they start leaking, sooner or later it’s going to blow. I guess if you’re paying attention, you just make sure to shut it off and coast to the side of the road before you completely lose oil pressure and wreck the engine, but seems like a gamble I’d rather not take.

It also just occurred to me that removing the engine seems a little drastic. Pretty sure most guys just drop the transmission to replace the RMS. Just guessing, but can’t see it being more than $2k at an indie?

I’d just replace it and worry about any other stuff if/when the time comes. Having said that, you can check for chain stretch with VCDS. And did the MKVs have the chain tensioner issue as well? That’s a huge one that should be dealt with if needed, but it’s easy to check whether or not your car is affected.

Ordered some exhaust parts for my truck at Rockauto today. Say it will arrive on Friday. The shop I go to could have repaired the truck today at a cost  of $740 but they did not have bolt on parts. They would have to fab something up. They suggested Rockauto . It will end up being 300 bucks cheaper just have to wait for the parts. Last year I had to source a muffler for it through Wrench Monkey.
Getting a bit harder to find parts for it.
One of the reasons why I am searching for something a bit newer.

Still waiting for my parts. Stuck in the Bronx. ::)  Have the exhaust held together with baling wire. ;D

Wish this was closer and no Covid. Close to what I have now and 15 years newer. https://www.kijijiautos.ca/cars/toyota/tacoma/?utm_content=web_ResultsSearch&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=kijiji#vip=18999608&utm_campaign=xpromo_srplisting

Finally after 2 weeks got the parts.  The JBweld and baling wire held her together until it was installed today. She purrs like a kitten, so quiet.

Maybe I won't sell her .

Finishing up a whole bunch of crap before the cars go on the road later this month (or whenever the roads are dry/salt-free). LS430 got its oil change and addressed a small coolant leak today.

Here's what's left:

Camry:
-Replacing the power antenna that was non-functional
-Oil change
-Trans fluid change

911
-New targa top should be here soon
-New OEM seats, dyed black
-New seat rails
-New targa top / door seals all around
-Re-aim headlights that are somehow cocked to the right
-New tires

M5
-Finish coding the facelift (02-03) taillights I installed
-Finish some last details
-Replace non-functional sunroof switch
-Code ABS module that had failed, triggering an ABS/DSC light

Aston
-Needs new brakes since I toasted the Brembos at the track last fall
-New battery
-Annual oil change

S2000
-Needs to be moved from the house garage to the office garage, where it'll sit for the long term future #SadFace

R8
-Replace windshield, took a chip last fall
-New tires
-Annual oil change

I think Leno has a staff of people who manage his collection of cars.  It likely takes a number of mechanics to keep his fleet up and running.
