Most of these modern automatics require the pan dropped, and in the case of the ZF units the filter is built into the pan itself, so the pan get replaced. Then filling it requires a bunch of delicate screwing around, with the engine running. Totally different ball game

Terrible. Imagine having to buy an oil pan to change a tranny filter. Worse is that the darn pan is plastic so vulnerable. Toyota always had it right. No filter, just a drain plug and a top filler.
