Thanks folks.

There was some slight damage when mounting but I think I should be able to touch that up. You can't notice with all the salt anyways.

At the same time, they are winter wheels, they look great as it is, so how hard are you really willing to try?

At this point it’s more about learning/knowing the best technique. I agree it’s not worth the effort from an aesthetic perspective.

I guess you'll find out if it is easy to touch up/blend.

If I could be absolutely sure to not get overspray on my new Blizzaks, I would consider painting my new winter wheels black (they are currently silver).  I wouldn't want to bother removing the tires, though.
You can use index cards around the rim, like so:

Oh man that would have been easier than the taping job I did a few years ago on a curb rash repair

That is a fantastic idea.  I have a new project for this summer.  Paint my silver winter wheels some sort of dark grey colour.

In Edmonton no need to paint your winter wheels dark grey. Five minutes of driving and they're dark grey.

I put a new battery in the GTI today. Had mixed feelings about it, as the original battery (yes, still on the 8 1/2 year old OE battery) is still going strong. Well, okay, maybe not strong, but it’s still been cranking the engine over just fine.

As much as I wanted to try for 9 or 10 years with the stock battery, I figured I’d feel pretty stupid if it stranded me one day this winter. So, was walking by the battery aisle at CT and just grabbed an Eliminator AGM to be done with it.

Still, can’t complain about 8 1/2 years on the stock battery. Look at that thing: not even a trace of corrosion on the terminals, and I’ve never touched it. VW does a pretty nice job of these: covered battery box, and a felt battery blanket too.

Nice.

Does your generation require the car to be reprogrammed for the new battery?  I know the Mk7 does.

We’re coming up on 11 years in the original battery in the Corolla. It’s just starting to show some signs of age, but still cranks the car over handily. I’ve thought about dropping a new one in before the really cold weather hits just to be safe.

I mentioned this to my wife. She says “shouldn’t the battery last longer?”  Good gawd woman! She loses track of how old stuff is. I fixed something on the clothes dryer recently and she said “why does it need fixing, it’s what, four or five years old?”  Uh, no the washer dryer set is 17 years old. They’re nice front loaders and still look modern, but no hon, they’re seventeen. We had to race to the store to buy them because we had a pre schooler that made laundry like crazy thanks to her love of mud. That pre schooler is turning 20.

Wait are you joking? What did I sign up for  :rofl2:

heli 8 years seems to be pretty good these days for a battery... I ended up replacing the battery on my parents' 2013 Focus and 2009 Odyssey this year (which got a new battery around the time the focus was bought)... while it worked, having to jump start them was the hint that they won't last much longer.

I think my dad is still on his original battery for his 2011 Corolla.

Yup.  The Mk7 changes the charging profile as the battery ages.

The computer accounts for the battery type (AGM, etc) and the Ah of the battery too.

If you don't register the new battery it will use the charging profile for the old one.

Fortunately you can make the changes using OBDEleven and it's pretty straightforward.

Nope, just hook up the new one and go. I did get a couple of warning lights, but they went out as soon as I drove a bit.

Been running errands around town and probably have half a dozen starts on it already. It wasn’t horrible before, but definitely cranks over quicker now and fires up right away.

Got the 951 ready for storage, hoping that the weather holds out tomorrow & stays dry, if so it'll be in the barn before dinner [emoji53]

Hope it's just a fluke.  But my friend had to have the dealership replace her battery on her VW Atlas!  Not even 2 years old.

Make sure you blow all the carbon out of the engine on the last drive before putting the car away  ;).  You know, because it's good for it.
