On Friday, I noticed my wife’s Forester was dripping fluid, I thought it was oil, and since it was due, we decided to take it for a Sat morning visit to the Mr Lube place. I got over the thrill of dealing with jugs of waste oil many years ago, so I don’t bother with that.
The guys there said it was actually a transmission leak, so we were thinking about large sums of money.
In the afternoon, I crawled under it, and thought, that filter looks old and dirty, did they even change it? I also felt a big dent and crease in it. Then the light came on (literally, I used a flashlight). It’s the transmission filter, stupid. A spin-on filter, just like a small oil filter. And it has a dent and crease in it so it probably doesn’t seal any longer.
This morning, she took it to the dealer, who confirmed the filter was leaking, replaced it and the fluid, quick fix, and off she goes. We’re both convinced that the only way that filter could have gotten dented was two weeks ago when the (same) dealer replaced the fuel lines; since then, nobody has been under the car in any way. Still, it’s fixed.
We did confirm something, though. Comparing the 2008 Forester with 140,000 km to the 2008 Corolla with 275,000 km that my daughter has: the Corolla is light years above the Forester when it comes to build quality, road feel, reliability, and aging.
