I am curious how that gasket looks/works - post some pics when you get it installed.
Here's a photo of the engine compartment of a VW Thing (not mine).
The thick, rubber gasket goes around the engine between the engine tin (black in colour) and the engine compartment (white in colour).
I went out before lunch and put the gasket in. I had to start at one end and pry it into place with a flat edge tool. Very slow going, but it's done.

It was much easier with the car on the lift. I set the car high enough on the lift so I could stand in the engine compartment and work on putting the gasket in place.
