didn't do it yet, but priced out this new windshield 'cover' stuff... guys are trying to sell it to our dealership. pretty much a tougher tint-like film that will go on the outside of the windshield... won't change the look or visibility, but guarantees against chips and the like... over the years, i'd say i've gone through 9 wrangler windshields, so a worthwhile investment likely.

Stop tailgating.  :P

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

everyone always says that... tailgating would get rocks into the grill! following the exact distance you are supposed to give the perfect arc and bounce...

and actually, most of mine aren't from trucks right in front... in other lanes, going the other direction, whatever.

but still... thought this was kinda cool. http://www.neverfrost.com/exoshield.html

How on earth do you go through that many windshields then, can't just be chance?  I've been driving for 25 years and never had a windshield crack on me.  I know Alberta can be worse for this given the road treatment, but not Dundas to Grimsby!  :rofl2:

1-2, I'll give you, ok maybe 3-4, 5 at a push, 6 is careless. 7, ok you had the brakes done and headbutted it didn't you..? 8, ex-wife? 9, full on Tiger Woods?

A windshield ever second year is pretty normal in Alberta. I live with the cracks until its really bad to stretch the cycle out a bit.

Since the windshield on a Wrangler is more upright than most cars, maybe that makes it more prone to rock chips? I imagine rocks are more likely to make a solid impact than being deflected like they would be with a more steeply raked windshield?

This would be my guess. I've gotten hit a lot over the last year but the worst I got was a chip that was repaired under insurance with no deductible.

^the windshield on my Wrangler cracked around this time last year (it was -25 at the time), got to work & just as I turned the Jeep off I heard a "POP" & there went the windshield. It was replaced for free under warranty since there was no stone chip that caused it... 2 weeks after I got the new one, on my way to Tremblant I get a rock hit it & caused a stone chip  :banghead:  got that filled right away to avoid it from cracking. They're just so vertical that any rock that hits them is a pretty direct impact & doesn't deflect off like a more raked one would.

Isn't it amazing how you can actually see the rock coming. Almost in slo-motion.

I wonder too if it's all the above plus related to the windshield having a bit more "give" than others due to it's still being hinged and not attached as firmly as most vehicles?

replaced the wiper blades on the Saab finally. Long overdue. New Bosch ones work a treat.

Isn't it.  On the highway I don't linger any distance behind dump trucks.

Most big rock chips I've gotten are from small cars, minivans and smaller suv's......

I don't follow dump trucks anymore either. Learned that lesson after a boulder dropped by one ripped the underside of my Alfa apart. Exhaust, headers, fuel line, oil pan - all needed to be replaced. At least the company paid for all the repairs...which were NOT cheap.

a little delayed, whoops!

yeah, as quad says... cambridge doesn't help. that was where is worked for 6 of my jeeps...

i drive mostly decent speed highways and put on decent kms. i've never chipped or cracked a windshield on anything other than a wrangler/TJ... you never get a glancing blow off them, it just SMACKS!

one time, i replaced the glass and two days later took another rock right square in the center... they hadn't even billed me for the last one and i had it over at the glass shop.

My rule when I'm on the moto: If I'm behind a dump truck, overtake at the next opportunity.

I'm usually tucked behind the windscreen above 90.
