Took the Elan out for a last blast, topless of course.(Hey I can emulate the PM 'eh)...went to a nearby quiet road with a few twisties where I usually open it up....was about to when a lil voice in my head (one of many ;) ) said look around and sure enuf in a little farmers field cut off amongst the reeds and brush I saw a third of a cop car....whew saved a few hundred there.................kept it to 90kph all the way back home(even in the driveway :P )......tucked away in a garage with peppermint Oil dotted about to discourage the varmits..usually give it a few runs thru winter when roads  R dry..........wot a wuss I am now..was my DD in TO for years............
Time is to stop everything happening at once

Changed over to the winter shoes after work. I didn't want to work on the car in the dark in the parking lot, but forecast is calling for 11° max with strong winds next couple days (aka....return to normal). I'd rather work in 23° weather.

I discovered an oil leak though. I half-removed the plastic undershield.........14 screws with just a flashlight is not ideal, but was enough to get a general idea. I think it is the dreaded oil pan gasket leak, or the rear main seal. Thus the 3er hasn't been really consuming oil, rather leaking...... :-\

Took it through the touchless last night to get rid of the construction grime - looks much better now - well at least the exterior...

I keep hoping that my intake manifold will fail soon so I can get it replaced under the 10-year warranty. And of course to get a deal on the carbon cleaning while they're in there.

So was I but thanks to some great coding by VW mine never 'failed' until 1500 kms after that extended 193,000 kms warranty.  ;D

Quote
I'm sure it could use a cleaning by now, but can't say as I've noticed any performance loss or other issues. Did you notice it running any better after the cleaning?

Yes I noticed it running better after the cleaning. Going back, I only had minor issues at very weird times but not very often. IE: under light load (~20% throttle) it would feel like it wasn't firing correctly (pinging?). But just push a little more on the throttle and problem solved. Of course, the number of times I use light throttle is very rare.

Also on cold start up it never sounded 100% right, odd but quiet farts through the exhaust.  I don't think many people would notice it but I could.

When I (cold) started my car yesterday morning it was very smooth and normal sounding. I noticed a difference right away. I also think the engine is smoother through the rev range.  Not that it was rough but I can feel a difference.

I'm now looking forward to doing some hwy driving to see if there is a difference in f/e. It has been so windy this summer I've been up 0.5-1.0 L/100 on many trips from normal but maybe it was just because of the carbon build up.

I see it as gaining weight. The carbon build up was over a long time and changes were very small when they happen. So it was like putting on 20 pounds over 6 years. Then had a magic weight loss in one day and I looked in the mirror and said, wow, I was fat.

This questions isn't if you have any carbon build up, it is how much do you have. Good luck and hope you can get VW to do yours when it's time.

Changed the oil in the Highlander today.  Doing it 2x a year now, once in the spring, and once in the fall, regardless of mileage.  Last year I did oil analysis, and at 15-17K I'm still well shy of the oil needing changing.  About $70 in Amsoil Signature full-synth and an Amsoil filter - cheap for premium goodies.  Tomorrow the Corolla gets the same treatment.

Gave the HL a once over while I was under it, and all looks good.  In the spring I'll crest the 300K mark and it will get a bunch of stuff done.  Hard to believe that I'm coming on 300K - she only had 145K when I got 'er.  Timing belt, plugs and some other stuff at 300K.  Nicely, all those things were done by the dealer prior to my taking delivery.  It got a new battery, timing belt/water-pump/etc, windscreen and major service (plugs, coolant, fluids) at 145K, and then I'd done interim work, and now at 300K she'll get a bunch of stuff again.  Cheap driving.  Really cheap driving.

gives you a better spark when tuned to a certain extent. I am sure APR or your installer can help you out on what range/model would be best. And better spark just might help with carbon buildup, not sure of that but the logic seems sound
If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

Put the winters on this morning. Now begins the few months of a softer riding/handling car.
