So pretty easy to draw a line between the carbon and the failure of the Intake Manifold Sensor.

Lesson learned; Catch Can

From what I know, the VW engines are notably prone to carbon build-up when not driven regularly on the autoroutes or longer periods of mid-to-high revs to burn off the build-up.

Point being drive it hard? Like you stole it? But...how'd you explain that in court in ON? Honestly, I was burning off the carbon buildups? I wasn't stunting!

Catch can? Explain ??? or would Google know what I would mean if I asked it?

Final question - that was inside the intake? Or is that buildup around the valves?

I, today, put the winter tires on both cars.  It might snow, and it might not, they keep changing the forecast. But at least I'm ready.

Well that must be false because 60-70% of my driving is hwy and even most of my city driving is still spirited.

Or maybe that is why I made it to 195k before the CEL came on.

Google would be better than me trying.  ;D   Worthwhile on engines that are regularly driven near or to redline.

195k is pretty good. Some VWs in the US supposedly start having issues with the build-up by the time 120k rolls around.

You guys don't cruise at 130+ regularly? Keeps cars and batteries healthy  :)

Was cruising for about an hour at 140-160 the other day. :)

Now at 195,000 kms and had to have my second repair on the GTI.

CEL came on, I read the code and says IMS (Intake Manifold Sensor). Do a little more reading and seems to be a common issue.  VW issued an extended warranty on these but I'm 1500 kms over so I dropped by my local VW shop asking for some goodwill. Flat out nope. Not worth the argument so just head over to my indy.

Got it done today and when I picked up the car, the receptionist starts off with "You have to see this" which is never good. Even the guy that runs the shop got excited but he already knew the surprise.

He drops a box on the counter and says "Check this out".

A nice box of carbon deposits. Followed up with "That was one of the most I've ever cleaned out from that generation".

He was also saying that the newest motors are horrible and should be cleaned every 50,000 kms. Ouch.

Guess it was only time. Here is a crappy picture. I probably could have almost covered a 8x10 piece of paper with it.

Oh ya, still on my original front brakes.

Interesting.

I keep hoping that my intake manifold will fail soon so I can get it replaced under the 10-year warranty. And of course to get a deal on the carbon cleaning while they're in there.

No issues for me after 7 years and 120k km. On every highway drive (and most of my driving is hwy), I make sure to spend at least 20 mins over 3,000 rpm. Either by going fast, or just driving in a lower gear. Sometimes I'll just leave it in fourth the whole way, flooring it to redline at regular intervals just for fun.

I'm sure it could use a cleaning by now, but can't say as I've noticed any performance loss or other issues. Did you notice it running any better after the cleaning?

So was I but thanks to some great coding by VW mine never 'failed' until 1500 kms after that extended 193,000 kms warranty.  ;D

Yes I noticed it running better after the cleaning. Going back, I only had minor issues at very weird times but not very often. IE: under light load (~20% throttle) it would feel like it wasn't firing correctly (pinging?). But just push a little more on the throttle and problem solved. Of course, the number of times I use light throttle is very rare.

Also on cold start up it never sounded 100% right, odd but quiet farts through the exhaust.  I don't think many people would notice it but I could.

When I (cold) started my car yesterday morning it was very smooth and normal sounding. I noticed a difference right away. I also think the engine is smoother through the rev range.  Not that it was rough but I can feel a difference.

I'm now looking forward to doing some hwy driving to see if there is a difference in f/e. It has been so windy this summer I've been up 0.5-1.0 L/100 on many trips from normal but maybe it was just because of the carbon build up.

I see it as gaining weight. The carbon build up was over a long time and changes were very small when they happen. So it was like putting on 20 pounds over 6 years. Then had a magic weight loss in one day and I looked in the mirror and said, wow, I was fat.

This questions isn't if you have any carbon build up, it is how much do you have. Good luck and hope you can get VW to do yours when it's time.

looks great!

drove the pacer again..... my goodness... all this nice weather... i think i'll put it away on sunday though.

will say it was a chilly ride in. i go windows down (slight exhaust leak, a bit of oil burning makes me not want to kill myself keeping it contained!)... had a big cab over beside me screwing up my speeds... i look over, and his arms are out the window doing a video of my car... whoops... shouldn't have been doing air drums and screaming along with grimes.
i used to be addicted to soap, but i'm clean now

Thanks! Cool you're still driving the Pacer... I'll be putting the Porsche away tomorrow, they're calling for snow on Sunday & then cold weather for the next 2 weeks... and more snow. Tomorrow is dry, sunny & +13, so one last round of golf & put the car away afterwards  ;D

Gurgie, the GC looks fantastic -I love that colour.

That's not my C30 - mine is charcoal grey, and really dirty around the door-bottoms/rocker panels thanks to construction in Gatineau...  Gonna take it through the touchless this evening.  Hopefully give it the full spa treatment sometime in the next two weeks.
I'd rather be car-poor than house-poor...

I put the SLK & Sonoma away early in October because I was sick of car :censor:....But with all the nice weather I've missed them. I am still driving the T/A though, although the forecast looks grim Sunday onwards, so it'll probably see limited use.
