Those costs seem insane.  Agree with Vmango that my WRX was always around $90 or something at KW (Gemini) Subie.   I take it to an indy shop now.

I left the dealership service when I hit the 40k service and they wanted $500 for brake job (+ typical service).   Indy did the same for $200 or so.

$400 for basic service seems bananas.

Yes, the shame and embarrassment right now are burning, that's for sure.  I asked for what I thought was the required 20,000 km service.  I should've been more diligent but was in a rush.  I'm certainly (and literally) paying for it.

I'll let them know when I pick the car up that I'll be taking my car to a private shop from now on (not that it'll make a lick of difference to them)...

On the upside, it gives me good fodder for an upcoming story.

So the Fozzie XT is back in Canada (yay!), but the ride back was facking awful.  Massive intermittent vibrations and terrible braking performance on the long drive, which of course didn't exhibit itself until about 45 mins into the 4.5 hr drive (making it somewhat questionable about 'what' to do).  Based on the situation, I assessed that it would be reasonable to drive slower, more carefully, and stop frequently to check everything I could.

Turns out that I was correct - front rotors and brakes (sticky front driver's side caliper and 2mm of pad left).

Funny that the pads should be at 2mm in the front (and 9mm in the rear) since I paid to have Subaru change out the brake pads all around 17 months ago (and she's driven <5,000km in the past year).  Also funny that the engine and cabin filters were "filthy" given that I paid to have them changed out in April of this year.

After about 2 hours on the phone, the dealership in Ithaca paid for the replacement filters that its employees failed to install (despite charging me for same), and the one here paid for the new (2 front) and machined (2 rear) rotors and front brake pads since its employees failed to do the front brakes last year despite charging me for same  >:(

Seriously, I'm really wanting to start DIYing more.

No charge to me today, but the bill was nearly $1k for 2 new rotors, 2 machined, new brake pads up front, filters, and tire balancing.  What bugs me isn't that I paid for things that I didn't get (that does bug me, but not nearly as much as:), but that they certified a car as having new brakes when it didn't.  In April, when I had the winter/OEM tires switched over, the dealership in Ithaca didn't say, "hey, your brake pads are seriously low, bro!".  No, it was "your work is done.  Pay us and get your car, and your ice cream bars!"

The ice cream was tasty, I'll admit.

...but I just drove 425km on a car, loaded with all of Lady Noto's belongings (and cat), with 2mm front brake pads with 'fried' rotors.  I'm livid.

On a side note, since I don't care to start new threads any more, the a/c condensation pipe in the condo above my new one in Guelph was out of place and now my bedroom wall is soaked, carpet flooded, and ceiling discoloured (likely to get mold), but the site manager went in for unsolicited 'repairs' and got paint on my brand new couch that I've never before sat on.

What a facking week of moving  :banghead:

Man....you gotta start doing your own for piddly little stuff like suspension and brakes. For about $500 you can get all new pads, 4rotors and a caliper and really you are in for about 2-3 hours of work. Oh....and the work will be done right.
Lighten up Francis.....

Brought it home. I bought this Austin A40 (not sure on exact year yet) back in March or so. Yes - it is a big pile of poo.

Having an older vehicle (out of warranty) helps a newbie DIY like me.  I have just him some road blocks when trying to do certain jobs.  But tomorrow I am buying a 1/2" breaker bar at Crappy Tire for $10, it's 75% off.  Slowly but surely getting the tools I need to do some of these jobs.

I've slowly acquired all the tools I need over the years. Crappy Tire is really good for it, their sales are awesome. Do I need a tool every now and then that I do not have, sure, but once you get to a certain point, it gets way cheaper and easier to get a tool every now and then.

Looking to get a torque wrench next.  Only want one, as I don't do a lot of work myself.  Mostly for tires.  Should I get the 3/8" or 1/2" ?

I'd say 1/2".  You can still get some pretty small sockets on a 1/2" as well as some large ones.  3/8" will work for wheels etc, but its a bit small and most larger sockets are for 1/2" drive.

Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

I have a 1/2" and a 1/4"....CT had a sale, both for $80. They are the Maximum series. I would go for 1/2 if you are mainly doing tires.

Definitely 1/2" for changing tires. My 3/8" only goes up to 22 lb*ft.

And did you know that there's a feature on CT's website that alerts you when stuff goes on sale? You can create your own wish list of tools, then it will email you when one of your items goes on sale. I find it super handy for stuff that I want, but don't need right away.
