The vehicle was made in 07 and so possibly 8 years old and only 8K km?  Yes.  So the coolant could be original and therefore very acidic.

Good point!  I'll check to see if it was ever changed.  It was dealer serviced annually so the oil change interval could only be 1k max.  :-\

Check local auto parts stores for coolant test strips

Installed a trailer light module in the Cayenne, we're heading to NB tomorrow and towing at least one dirt-bike on the trailer.

I would change the brake fluid as well as the coolant  and  seriously consider putting a synthetic of some recommend variety in the transmission and diff.  Just because of the age especially for the brake fluid..   After all this is a keeper not a one night stand.

Absolutely!  All fluids will be changed out soon enough.  I'm still in the discovery stage.  I just found out it has a outside temp gauge thanks to a quick visit to see Shane this morning.

Took it in for its "20,000 km service" to the dealership.  It's the first time I've been into a dealership for service in a few years, having taken the BMW to a private mechanic once it was out of warranty.  I emptied my bowels in my trousers when I was told it would be more than $400 for what's essentially an oil change, tire rotation and cabin filter replacement.

Likely to be the first, and last time I have the WRX serviced at the dealership.  At least I got a nice ride in the shuttle vehicle driven by a malodorous fella who crudely criticized other motorists we encountered along the way.   ::)

Anyone afraid of owning a European car due maintenance costs has nothing to fear compared to Subaru ownership it seems.

At least now there are indies who are quite competent on subarus.  Back when I owned my 97 OBW it was the dealer only who would service them and kaching, kaching, kaching every time.  :P

Wow. My service was always cheap with my WRX. What is going on? $400??!? How?

Well it's synthetic oil now, so ... you know...  time to gouge?

You guys should write an article about people who buy performance cars without any idea what the maintenance costs will be.  ;D

 :shuffle:

I know what the cost would've been if I'd picked up a 228i instead...  ;)

We've had 2 services with the Crosstrek, both times $90.  Synthetic oil.
Would seem the K/W Subaru dealer is one of the few good ones around.  I've been 100% impressed with them so far

Did you get the breakdown of that $400? Mercedes provides excellent detail about where my $400 went.

Really?  Okay then when I go back to pick up the car, I'll dig deeper.

In retrospect, I didn't ask what the minimum was that was required to maintain the warranty and I bet there's a boat load of extra "inspections" I'm paying for needlessly.  In which case, it's my own stupid fault for not being more diligent.   :-\

Both services so far have been same - LOF & inspections.

No tire rotations (had winters on for second service so didn't need a swap) and haven't had cabin filter done...
I'd guess the next one might be more painful to the wallet, but that won't be until Sept sometime

$50 for tire change
$100 for oil
$100 for cabin filter ($20 part and $80 labour you could have done that yourself)
$60 to check the brakes and "chassis bolts"

You don't need a cabin filter at 20K.

Tire rotation...  :rofl2: Don't they already go around?

Did they insure it against fall apart?
