Did a Canadian Tire AC recharge kit on the Ramcharger, worked better than expected, for $54 couldn't really go wrong.

Also changed out the coolant, the old stuff was pretty murky.

A couple of weeks back swapped out the exhaust, removed the cat and ran 3" all the way with a Flowmaster.  Also cut the belt off for the smog pump.

Yay 8 hours later my truck stops!

Left rear caliper was seized, that was for some reason messing up the whole system.  I decided I would replace all the rotors and pads while I was at it to towing quality instead of the cheap junk the used car dealer installed.  Front pads were half gone and rears 3/4 gone anyways.

Switching the new caliper and rotor on the left rear was quick and easy enough, no surprises.  Right rear was going well but man I could not get the pads in, the clips and where they sit was so rusted.  Back to the store today to get new clips, WOW took 5 mins instead of an hour to get the pads in.  Go for a drive, noisy as all heck.  Ugh drum parking brake on the rear rubbing, that went away but I took everything off again at first to figure it out.

Then the fronts, oh boy.  Hey why not use Brembo brakes in the front, because those are awesome right?  Wrong :(

If you aren't familiar with Brembo style, you bang two pins out and pull the pads off.  Well at least I know my fronts are 4 piston calipers that pretty bad ass.

Anyways, the top pin banged out after much hammering.  The bottom pin (on both sides) was a nightmare, it just would not come out.  I ended up buying new pins.  I cut the pins in half, got half out, then the other half wouldn't come out.  I had to drill them out!!

One of them I had to drill fully, the other one I drilled it about halfway then jammed a punch in there and with the sledge it finally popped out.  What a mess.

They shouldn't get stuck again now the hole is larger.

Anyways, night and day difference.  Cost me about $650 in parts

^I believe my Tundra has the same fronts.  Thanks for the heads up, can't wait to do those. :P

Yup Tundra is the same.

My pads were changed by the used car dealer before I got it, I suspect the re-used the pins and just hammered them in with abandon.  I think I got unlucky, who knows.  But I was reading online about others with major issues getting them out.

After I grinded them flush with the caliper I could see it was certainly a pin totally visible it was just stuck, craziness.

Well, good to know, thanks for the info.  Guess I'll get some pins before the job.  However, I have 120k and still a lot of pad life left.  Next time I have the wheels off I'll check on those pins and see what kind of condition they're in.

Yeah get the PINS anyways.  It was $11 for 4 pins and clips that does both front sets.  Not worth using the old hardware.

This is where I take it to a shop, pay the money, and spend the day doing something else.

Don't get me wrong, I like working on cars, but I don't have the patience for stuff like that.

took apart rear brakes, i thought i had the brake piston tools that i borrowed from dad.. turns out, it returned it.

drove to canadian tires, auto value and princess auto.  none of them have the piston tools for the brake calipers for the VW.

put it all back together.   darn.

Why do you need a tool to push back the piston?

It seems that once the brake pressure is released from the caliper the piston can be turned with a strong pair of fingers or in the alternative a channel lock plier.

If for some reason the fluid is not released then I can see it would be hard to turn and would require a proper fitting tool.

Most cars with the E-brake built into the caliper use a "spinner". There's a square bit that fits onto your ratchet that spins it. I bought one at CT a few months ago.

Usually you can use a screwdriver as well.   I have one of those cubes though like $5

Odd that CT didn't have the tool. I spent 5 minutes unsuccessfully futzing with mine, then just went to CT to rent the proper tool. The tool compresses and spins at the same time - was super quick and easy.

yup, i picked up one of these, but none of the sides would fit on the channels grooved on the piston.

returned it.

canadian tire rented out all their tools, so they didn't have any for me.

my father has the tools, so i'm going to go grab it tonight.

Weekend got eaten up with house and Father's stuff, but I did get the chance to give the T/Aa well deserved wash.
Today I drove the Sonoma to work for the first time in like a year or so...ran great, but pulling into the parking spot I noticed my brake lights weren't working. Giggled the brake switch around a bit and they're working now, but I guess I'll be stopping the parts store tonight for a new switch :( (#2 for this truck).

Also, my dad picked up a 67 Austin Healey 3000 over the weekend, it needs a thorough cleaning, but it's a very nice car:
