Not quite a today post since it happened last night.

Picked up my brand new Mercedes GLK 250 Bluetec from the dealership at 6:30pm.

Got rear ended at 7:30pm.

Congrats on the new vehicle and condolances on the bad luck!  Very nice choice btw!  I'd be interested in your impressions of the GLK once you get things sorted out...and good luck with your negotiations.

My wife, after Christmas of course, said she would like a rear view camera for the RAV, so I ordered one from Costco today http://www.costco.ca/Rear-View-RVS-091406-Digital-Wireless-Backup-Camera--.product.100140932.html.  Should be here in a week to 10 days for me to install.  This unit gets the best reviews I could find on the 'net, and I like the large 5" screen it has.  Will see how it is once installed.

Why not change both, assuming the good one is original? I hear they lose brightness over time.

'Cause it's winter and I'm lazy.  Can't tell the difference between the two anyway.

Froze my arse off in my marginally heated garage working on the Spitfire which has a bad rubbing/grinding noise on engine braking.

Removed the transmission, clutch, clutch slave cylinder and flywheel for a complete overhaul. Found a pilot bushing to be badly worn and some excessive play in the transmission input shaft.

Hoping to have it all back together in a couple weekends - provided I can get the parts that I need.

Hmm, never realized it was that much.  Not sure if I should just change the bulbs, or get some kind of upgrade, like GE Nighthawks? Any other suggestions?  Thinking under $200, for the van...

Cleaned the dirt out behind the gas tank door, was far to cold to do anything else.

Did not see that, but looking at the spec of the Costco unit, it seems a bit better, ie night vision 50' vs 10' and 130 vs 110 degree rear vision, not to mention my wife's Samsung does not have a 5" screen.  Neat idea though.

I always do both at the same time, like shocks.  I have noticed a difference, even in alignment.

I replaced a rear bulb that burned out sometime last year on the car and from what I remember the replacement bulb was sold in pairs.  :-\  I only replaced the burnt one at the time and the other one failed within two weeks.

The Benz dealership have their bodyshop guy coming to look at it this Friday morning and to give a quote to fix it.  If the other guy won't settle cash at that point I'll have his insurance pay it up.

Realize the Bodyshop guy picked by the Benz dealer will routinely adjust the damage at very inflated prices.  Best to tell him that you are actually picking up the tab personally for reasons that you prefer not to discuss so as to temper his "Benz" pricing.

The reason being is that if the tab is stupidly inflated and the other party momentarily has a lapse of judgement and does go thru insurance your vehicle will suffer an immediate and permanent "diminished value".  Hence, extra patience might be required to stick handle the negotiations.

So ended up with an interesting experience. First I went to Carstar (where I have all my insurance-paid work done) to get a quote. The Carstar guy just rubbed out the paint marking with a finger, recommended that the chrome scratch was actually probably just plastic residue and would come off with nail polish remover at home, and then recommended against getting the slight damage to the plastic trim on the bumper fixed - he said that taking off the bumper (with all its embedded electronics), disassembling it , replacing the trim, and putting it back together had its own risks which he wouldn't take with his own car for such little damage. I pushed him for a quote, he estimated 4 hours of labour plus parts for $400 to $500.

I thought that wasn't bad for settling out of pocket so went to the MB guy expecting something similar or higher.

The Benz recommended guy rubbed out most of the chrome damage with his finger, then got down to take a close look at the bumper and underneath, and pronounced that the plastic trim could be removed without needing to take the bumper off, so he wouldn't even charge labour, just parts. The parts were $87, and he recommended me to ask the other guy for $150. The shop has a courtesy smart car they said I could drive during the day while I get it fixed.

Called the other guys, he'll give me the $150 tomorrow but he asked for a receipt for $150 from the bodyshop. Don't feel obligated to have to give it him, but it should just be a win-win for him & the bodyshop if the bodyshop gets to add enough labour to make up close to $150 in total on the bill.
"
I just need to check if the last 1cm of the chrome "scratch" will disappear with acetone.

I would have told him to go fack himself.  The stupidity of ppl never ceases to amaze me. He is inches away from an at fault accident that has the potential of costing him a bloody fortune in the years ahead.  @ $200. damage you are hardly going to get tagged in the future for diminished value.  You are doing this guy a monster favour, because who is to say 6 months from now those bumper sensor screw up.  Who pays the 4 or 5K then ???

For damage and inconvenience it's $500 all day long.

Got the accident damage fixed up yesterday. Today, dropped off the Benz at at Advanced Automove Films / GTA in Detail (in Mississauga) for its Xpel Ultimate film on the hood, front fenders, and front bumpers. After that it gets a coat of cQuartz Finest sealant all over, which is getting rave reviews online and which is supposed to not only protect the paint but also eliminate the need to wax it for a minimum of 2 years (that's the limited warranty), but potentially even longer. Will give updates here.

I found a neat setting on my ATS today: Set Startup Volume for the radio. No more getting blown away by my wife's Zumba music at 8am because she forgot to turn it down.

Of course I was looking for the fan control so that tells you how awesome the UX is, even without CUE.

Listed the Patriot or the Wrangler? Assuming the former! What are you going to get?
