me too.   i'm just really surprised they haven't done it earlier.

for the weight, steel is much much stronger than steel, so it would make sense, weight wise...  they just would use much less...

I'm confused...
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

That's better.  But I need to know what type of steel.....I could then model it and tell you the weights vs. alum.  If I feel motivated... ;D

Since we're on the topic of wheels... I decided that my winters needed some TLC.  They were chipped badly, mainly from the previous owner who traveled a lot of gravel, however the finish was getting progressively worse over the years. This is what they looked like:

I decided to paint them myself.  I spent about four hours sanding, and another couple washing/degreasing prepping them for paint.  Here they are ready for primer:

Below is one primed:

Now the ugly part starts.  Upon drying, the primer was wrinkling, as shown below.  This was happening on all four wheels, on a good portion of the surface area.  My prep work was good, I didn't know what the hell was going on.  I let the first primer coat dry, sanded again, and primed once more with the same results.

At this point I called the BIL who is a journeyman bodyman.  He said that sometimes primer will lift the existing paint at the interface with bare metal.  Next he said to stop pissing around and bring them to the shop for sandblasting.  So this morning I took them to the shop, sandblasted the wheels, now they are waiting their turn in the paint booth.  I should have called him in the first place but wanted to take care of these myself.  Lesson learned.  :P  Sandblasted wheel below, took me about an hour for all four  :banghead:  I'll post pics once painted.

Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

The same sort of thing happened to me back in 1980. 2nd hand alloys for a SAAB. Laboriously cleaned and primed...with a greenish yellow primer specifically for aluminium.   When I put the paint on, paint that specifically said it should go on top of the primer I used, it wrinkled like that.   I just sold the wheels on to somebody.

Well I am not sure if we had what did you do to your motorcycle today?  So I thought maybe the motorcycle.  Not that far fetched, season is nearly over...Did you sell it privately?  Didn't even see it on the classifieds here...

Actually I sold the bike in August, to it was a fair guess too.  I did sell it privately -- wasn't listed here, just on AutoTrader and Kijiji

What are you replacing it with?

Something that doesn't need to see the dealer so often?   :rofl2:

I'm guessing the warranty expired?   ;D

From Toronto.   ;D

*****

The warranty ran out in June, so that certainly helped motivate me getting rid of it.  It was very reliable for me though over the 3 years I had it, as have been all three of my Bimmers.  Minor electrical gremlins here and there, but once-a-year dealership visits are far less than what I'll be doing with any Japanese car.

The reality is that it sat in manufacturer lots far more than I drove it over the past two years, so it was a silly amount of money to be tied up in something that was just deteriorating.

It'll be replaced with something that costs me much, much less, that won't be a worry for reliability and will serve my practical needs... but still have some fun too.   ;)

This is the typical FCG owner: My car was so reliable, I needed to sell it immediately when the warranty was up!
